Has anyone purchased the SpydeRench or the byrdRench?

I just got my new 2009 Spyderco Product catalog a few days ago and I noticed the SpydeRench and the byrdRench (T01 and BY15 in the catalog respectively). I tried looking up some user info from anyone on YouTube and all I could find was a silent demonstration video titled "Spyderco byrdRench Multitool & Knife." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zjf7PA5embc

The 'gadget' looks kinda gimmicky but with all the 'stuff' on it, I must admit that I'm a bit intrigued. It's a little heavy (8 oz. for the Byrd edition / 7.8 oz. for the Spyderco ed.). Anyway, I figured I'd hit up the forums and see if anyone has purchased the multitool yet, and if so, what is your honest take on the thing. Is it too cumbersome? Too bulky? How does it feel? etc.

Thanks.

I carry a Spyderench everyday. It is a very useful tool and is good quality. It will seem different when compared to a Leatherman type tool. It is a bit heavy, but I wear mine on my back right pocket, so it's not an issue. It is very comfortable to use and sees use everyday.

I posted this same question on the Forum on Spyderco's website and others have good exerience with theirs also.

I noticed that the only difference (at least from what I can make out in the catalog) between the SpydeRench and the byrdRench is that the mainline Spyderco edition uses AUS-8 steel while the Byrd line model uses the standard Byrd steel, viz., 8Cr13Mov. Since I've heard from numerous sources, including Spyderco, that 8Cr13Mov is analogous to AUS-8, is there any real reason to go with the more expensive SpydeRench? In other words, what made you decide to go with the SpydeRench as opposed to the Byrd model? :)

My SpydeRench is one of the originals with 440C steel. The ByrdRench is actually a little larger, has a punch end on the file instead of a small straight screwdriver and has a better #1 Phillips. The downside is the coarse round file instead of the triangle diamond file of the SpydeRench. You can see some side by side pix by following the link in my review here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=558191

Hey yablanowitz, I just got finished reading your great review, and EXCELLENT PICTURES. Very helpful considering the fact that there's only 2 in the catalog. So would you personally recommend the ByrdRench? Sounded like you were leaning more towards that way.

The one thing I really didn't like about the ByrdRench was the file. The tools (both of them) only lock shut securely if the file is inserted a certain way. On the Byrd, that leaves a coarse round file sticking out on one side, sure to devour pockets in a day or two, and anything else going by. Not a big deal if you use the belt pouch, very big deal if you carry in a pocket or (as I usually do) clipped inside your waistband. The fit and finish are better on the Spydie version, and overall quality is better.

If you can find and can afford the SpydeRench, I'd go with it. If your budget won't allow that, the ByrdRench is a pretty good substitute.
