Its a 1095 core, with multiple layers of 15N20 outside. See the weird grain of the 1095 that looks like it goes under the jacket steel? No idea how it happened.

I had it sanded down to 400 grit and etched it. I think it looks quite interesting, but I still have no idea how it happened.

do you mean the fine horizontal dark lines on the 1095 ? i think its called banding or something similar.

Did you surface grind your blank or generate heat at all? In my experience surface grinding deep will change the heat treat and leave marks like that where it made the passes. But it's weird it goes all the way to the cutting edge... Normally it would just be on the flats

Hard to say from the picture, but I would think it more likely you had something that just impacted both the outer and inner layer (whether that be banding or just scratching). Because both layers are impacted and the lines "line up" it would look like it's showing through, but it's really just both parts were impacted the same.

I'm with Nate. I think it is an illusion.

It is some sort of surface effect that is on both, and give the illusion that it is being seen through the ten layers of 15N20. Notice that it is as bold up at the spine as it is on the bare core. I suspect there were some residual deeper scratch marks left behind and they etched darker because they retained more etchant.

The deep looking line near the edge in the middle of the blade does puzzle me.
