Thanks guys!

Indian George,
H-1 is what Spyderco uses on it's Salt models. It seems to be completely rust proof. Here's a link to Spyderco's Steel Chart, it's the first one on the list. It's a precipitation-hardened steel, so you don't heat treat it. Some of the guys on the forums tried all kinds of crazy stuff to get some H-1 to rust, but it simply would not. This is what Spyderco says about H-1;
A big myth in the knife world is that out there somewhere is a knife that seriously cuts but cannot rust. Knives claiming these super powers are usually made with steels that are unable to hold a cutting edge for any measurable amount of time. Finally a steel foundry in Japan called Myodo Foundry makes this myth a reality with the introduction of a new steel called H1. H1 steel is a PH steel, meaning it is a precipitation-hardened steel. "Huh" you ask? Utilizing .1% nitrogen instead of carbon to harden the steel, it reaches a Rockwell hardness of 57-58rc.
I have a Spyderco Pacific Salt, a Benchmade H20 (they have since switched to X15 steel), and a TUSA FK-230, all in H-1, and I am quite pleased with each of them.

gratewhitehuntr,
I tried to find some H-1 blanks a few months ago and couldn't find anything. This leads me to assume that H-1 is not available to the general public. I would love to get some to make my own dive knife out out, but that doesn't seem like an option at this time.

OK so how about other PH steels??
Is there anything worth a damn?

I am going to be going for a extremely fine edge here, as in straight razor sharpness. A wedge though, not a hollow grind.

One of the main things that attracted me to H1 was the fact that is is hard from the factory.

Also the fact that it gets work hardened. The conversation in the Spyderco forums would indicate that the smooth edge H1 knives have a a 60 RH and the serrated knives have a 63 RH.
The difference being the extra work done in serrating the knife raising the hardness.

BTW, VG10 and AUS8 rust in my pocket.
I wear a VG10 folder in my PJs and I have to oil it every other day or it will rust.
I have had an H1 Tasman Salt in my pocket for 4 months and it has not a spot one. Holds a good edge too!

well now after reading what Spyderco said I wonder if they knew what they were talkin about.
I mean whoever posted those numbers I listed.
Well anyway, I saw where Sal said it was hard from the factory because they were talkin about how hard it was to work with.
