Has anyone seen this on their umnanzaan?

My late 2015 umnanzaan has this relief cut (dent)on one of the thumb stud.(circled in red on the picture)

According to CRK this is introduced to the umnanzaan to reduce stresses between the stud and the blade (I have not heard of a case of blade cracking due to the pressure build up between the stud and the blade) and it will be introduced to the Sebenzas as well.

I was wondering does anyone else noticed this on their umnanzaan and what their thoughts are on this. I find it a bit of an after thought and really ruined the perfect symmetry of the design.

That is horrible! Better send it to me for proper disposal :p

On a serious note, if CRK realizes that there is a problem and try to correct the problem through engineering a solution, then it is continued improvement..no?
To be sure, that is an area of stress if the blade was going to break. The solution moves the stress from the blade to the thumbstud by allowing the thumbstud to collapse a little.
Probably also reduces surface area so that they can install the studs easier.
This has been a problem in the distant past with Sebenzas. Have not seen or heard of it recently..but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen either.

Mine made on the 4th quarter of 2015(D15).
I'm starting to have a bad feeling about this... Is it possible it's Some kinda of blemishes? and someone at CRK is giving me the run around so I don't go and return it... 😂

I think it is what they said it is. A small improvement, but I can see how it would bother you.

Sidenote: Makes sense that they plan to also introduce this on the sebenzas. The thumbstud is press fit and blades have cracked. This is exactly why they won't touch the thumbstuds on BG42 blades anymore. They run the risk of cracking a blade they no longer can replace with the same steel.

I really hope they don't apply it to the sebenza thumbstud, it's not a pretty sight(can you imagine a little dent on those blue finishes 😯)

I have no doubt it's what they said it is... Just curious why no one had noticed these changes on their new CRKs...

You wouldn't see it on a Sebenza as the thumbstud has a shoulder on it that sits flush with the blade.

Let me take a closer look at my Sebenza 25(which is also marked D15). But I just don't see how they can do that to the thumbstud without leaving a mark(no matter how small it might be)

Is the stjd the same length on the other side?. Maybe not pressed in all the way. Take a pic square on perhaps.

This being my one and only large from 2012 I just figured they had been putting a flat on the large Sebbies thumb studs for quite a while....might just be mine?

Appologies for the pic quality but the flat is facing NE

Just checked, nothing like that on all my sebies...
This might be something completely different from mine.

Just been thinking about it and I can't imagine that flat being machined on my stud by accident, perhaps a trial done back in 2012 in an attempt to reduce stress fractures or ease of fitment? Seems also to be the time they changed from the flat end finish to the nipple finish above.

man I had to look real hard with my jewelers loupe - but my Zaan does have that on one of the thumbstuds.

I can only see it on the lockside.

mine is C-14

It's interesting and informative to discuss features on our CRk's and to see when certain changes are made.. but sometimes it seems like the emperors new suit.... someone notices a small detail and some folks get freaked out about a detail they never would have noticed, and think it's a flaw or mistake.... enjoy the quality of a product that exceeds all expectations. I don't mean follow blindly, but have a little faith!

I have a Large from 2012, as a matter of fact, 2. Both Damascus. Guesssss what!!

They both have it! My only other large is from 2016 also Damascus, nothing there. Everything else I have is a 25, or a small. My small is not here to check.

I'm pretty sure I should add this to the list of improvements the 25 made to the 21. Sorry I couldn't resist. Bahahahahahaha :D
