Has anyone stopped carrying folders in favor of fixed blades?

I have a razel on order and for most of my every day uses I think it will serve me better than a folder and that I will likely find myself reaching for it very often.

That being said, I don't expect it to replace my folder exactly... I wear pants with lots of pockets! :)

i too gave up on folders several years ago now. i always developed blade play in my folders which is a big pet peeve of mine so i switched to a fb.

it took a long time to find the perfect edc though. i carry a busse public defender in a iwb okuden kydex sheath. i tied a loop of paracord on the sheath for when i needed optimal concealment to make a jsp static cord system. i can drop the knife below the belt line with this set up if need be.

i also like the new busse meaner street and the small strider db tanto which will ride in a pocket very easily.

Me too, I carry fixed whenever possible.

Safer, stronger, faster to deploy for starters.

Kydex sheaths eliminate the whole "what if you fall on your knife" issue entirely, as does a well made leather sheath.

I always try to have a fixed blade on me even while carrying a folder or two. Of the folders, they are usually something tactical and something small and simple, like a nice looking slip joint. The slip gets used the most. I have not switched to FB only.

I EDC a large fixed blade along with a clipped folder, sak and a small folder. Its 100% legal, so it works for me. Plus, I guess I just dont give a damn what sheeple think. If I ever got to the point where I patterned my lifestyle to cater to people who fear knives, it would be a sad day.

I'm right there with you brother...

I carry both a fixed blade, and a folder on a daily business..

Yesterday.. Jeff Diotte Pirhana skeletonized variant that I ground, Emerson Commander and a SAK Camper

Today...Randy Doucette (not sure which model) fixed blade, SOG NightVision folder and a SAK camper...

Tomorrow... We'll see..

I was just thinking this would be a good post since I was considering the change up. I have grown used to a folder but I was thinking the fixed blade could just handle more abuse and be cleaned up easier. I am not too concerned with other people as my EDC is an auto or sometimes an assisted opener. Its been legal again since they change the law last year in Florida. I do usually get a response from someone who may see me open it "hey isn't that illegal?" but less often lately. Most people in Florida are from up North any how. Sorry to get off topic, I actually wouldnt mind carrying it concealed. I was thinking about a modified ankle holster for most days. I think it would be more comfortable and I wouldn't have any need for a quick draw since that's not what I' m grabbin for if the brown stuff hits the fan. So I may try it as soon as I can find the right fixed blade. I had thought of ther CR aviator and maybe I should try it but it's a bit expensive to abuse. I guess the only way not to fail is to try it!:p

I have begun carrying a BM Snody 220. It rides so well in a great On-Scene Tactical sheath, horizontal, weak side. Very appealing carry method for me. It also frees up a bit of room for more pocket stuff that you'd rather not have bumping against your folder.

With the Fla CCW laws I can carry pretty much what I want to as long as it's 'concealed'. I've always carried a FB and only recently (last year or so) started carrying a folder (Sebbie) just for the sheeple. I can open the Sebbie nice and slow and they don't seem to freak out as much. But, pull the Busse Active Duty with exactly the same size/shape blade of the Sebbie freaks them out. Something about looking for all the world like you're going to scratch your belly and a knife appearing. LOL

Now I carry both, but no one ever sees the FB.

I carry a fixed blade all the time in the winter when I'm working and have coveralls on. Its easy then.
I'd like to make the switch all the time, but haven't found the right knife and sheath yet. I always carry a 3.5-4" bladed folder, and its hard to find a fixed blade that size with a decent handle that carries very easily for me. I already have a multi tool and flashlight on my belt and my waist isn't THAT big to go sticking too much more stuff on there
I've been trying to come up with an idea for something slim I can make a clip sheath for, so I could carry it in a pocket or on my belt depending on what I was doing. I work outside doing a lot of different things, and whats comfortable up moving around, may not work when I get on a horse or tractor. I still carry a fixed blade on occasion, and its nice when I'm using the knife, but not as practical to carry.
Haven't really had any trouble with sheeple. Get more comments for the large so called tactical folders actually. Course it is kind of funny how big an AFCK looks next to a fixed blade of the same blade length. And my other EDC is a homemade stainless framelock that probably weighs 2 lbs  :D

For me, whether to go with fixed or folder is a function of climate. In the cooler weather I love to clip my Bud Nealy sheath to the armhole of my vest to carry the 4" fixed, or maybe IWB at 1:00. In warmer weather, I don't wear vests & don't have an overshirt, jacket or sweater to cover the IWB, so I go with a Chinook II in the front pocket until it gets hot (like now, 90+), then I wear a lighter folder (Endura) so my shorts don't get dragged down.

The idea of an "EDC rotation" is brilliant no matter how you cut it: more variety, more fun, more obsessing. I've been hankering for a Ranger Renegade 'hawk for awhile now ...I'll EDC that one, walk around town like Thor...

I prefer to carry a fixed blade. Graham Knives offer many styles and a great in-the-pocket solution. Only a small amount of the handle shows. Quick into action and always open.

Who said anything about catering to the sheeple? Like you I also carry two blades, a Spydie Military and a William Henry Spire. Both legal. But I also live in a jurisdiction that mandates open carry of fixed blades. Folders on the other hand can be carried concealed. So carrying a folder gives me more options carry-wise.

With regards to the sheeple, I do not compromise my rights. But to tell you the truth, it gets a little tiresome having to explain why I carry a knife. So I carry two. No problem since I like to carry two anyway, and I don't have to see others freak out when I use my little WH.

I used to carry many folders (from a noname chinese copy to Spy police:)) but in the last two years - with a short and disappointment-causing interlude - I changed to fixed blades. Now I carry a Strider CPS, and have no plans to replace it :D :D

i carry a FB (bud nealy amoeba) in the cooler weather occasionally, carrry a bud nealy pesh kebz when biking in the summer, but usually its a folder for me just too much easier to fool with i already carry a kahr PM9, extra ammo, OC, ID/etc, surefire, etc etc i almost need a porter to walk behing me and help carry my stuff lol.

I've found the Fallkniven WM-1 to be a very good fixed blade for urban EDC. It is very sheeple friendly (I have the polished blade model, not the black one), it gets less attention than most of my folders. Blade length is about enough for most daily chores.

I still carry folders all the time, but I'm seriously considering a fixed blade EDC rotation.

I think I'm going to try just carrying a fixed blade for a while and see if I miss my folders. I think I can work it into my EDC if I can get a good carry method going. I'm not really worried about what others will think when I pull out a FB...most of the people I'm around could care less.

I live in Idaho and I carried 7" model 2 Randall made as well as many less "sheeple unfriendly" knives without alot of probs. Its more irritating the jokes about who I am going to meet in a dark alley then anything else. I like the idea behind a A.G.Russell's Woodswalker alot. If it takes two hands to get it out and use it and put it back, I say no problem. I don't wanna go fast I don't even aprooch the idea of a knife as a weapon. Its more of a liability in a fight then having nothing that can be taken and used against you in the alley or the courtroom. I stay away from situations where a knife would make ya feel better. WHy even get near the fire if ya don't wanna play with it?
When I am in Los Angeles I like to have a dangle sheath that has trigger swivel snaps so I don't even need a belt. I just clip it on the belt loop and take it off when I go inside the mall or whatever. I like the idea of a fixed blade aking th eplace of a folder!
