Has anyone "thinned" a Buck/Strider

Just bought a mini spearpoint from one of these forums. I live in a small town and usually have to purchase a knife, flashlight, etc. to look at it, can't run to the local 1,000,000,000 sq ft. mall (we only have 3 traffic lights). Anyway back to the mini-----it is thick in the scales. Has anyone taken their's apart and filed/sanded down the liner and scales?
Did a search and didn't see anything like this

It's fairly strait forward to take them apart. You just need the torx wrenches and you can get them at Sears. You can sand the scales on a flat surface starting with 100/150 grit working up to the finer grits, and ending with a polish like Flitz. Or, you can leave them a little rough for better grip.

stratocaster, your buck striders look spectacular. WOW! I really like the polished finish better than the beadblast.

How did you get that pattern on the G-10? Do you have any more pics? Do you have a website to show off your work?

Wow, Stratocaster those are real nice, guess I'll have to give it a try on mine. Thanks for posting the info and pictures.

Tom

I have to admit, I did not do the work on these blades. Forumite Todd Foster did exceptional work on these three. I have taken these apart however and I have since done the same process to a Emerson Mini Commander myself with similar results.
Thanks,
Scott

Nonbox, the pattern in the G-10 is because it is made up of layers of epoxy and fiberglass. As you sand an shape the scales it reveals the patterns. Neat lookin' huh? The only problem is the grip is less secure with the high polish, but when smooth there more friendly to you clothes. Of course you don't have to use the finer sandpapers and still leave enough grip for practical uses.

Does Todd Foster have a website to show off his work? How much does it cost to have the blade, liner, and clip polished? I love satin finishes. I would like to see close up pics of this work.

I like the look of the sanded G-10 pattern but I would not have this done because I prefer more grip.

Nonbox,
I believe his user ID is TODD1. I have seen a few others he has done and the ALL look GREAT.

Todd is a great guy to deal with. He gave me a super good price for these and his turn around was lightning fast., Hope he still does this as a "hobby" (it's been several months) I have some more work for him.
Thanks,
Scott :)

still haven't really gotten the answer I am looking for. Has anyone done this? If the liners are titanium will they sand down easily? Isn't titanium hardened? Wasn't looking to "pretty up" the scales, but to sand the liners and the BACK side of the G-10 (that would leave the grip intact). By the way the knives you have shown are great looking Stratocaster

That's what I'd like mine to look like! Who do I contact, how much, how long, where?

535sawby what is "Todd" turn around time? What is his rate? Is Todd the only one that does this service?

Todd1 is the man who did the job on these B/S's. If you are interested please do a search, contact the man and see what he has to say. He does great work as you can see.
Thanks,
Scott

Be careful with trying to thin the knife. If you don't get the G-10 and the Titanium perfectly flat again they won't fit together and there will be a gap. It would be very difficult to do this by hand. If you don't have a surface grinder at home I would really worn against it. You can try a plate of glass (very flat and somewhat cheap and easy to get) and some sand paper, but be careful and go slow.
And also, I don't think Titanium is a hardened material. As I understand it a nonferrous metal doesn’t see any benefit from attempting to temper. You can think of Titanium as a (natrually) very hard Aluminum, copper, silver, etc. This is typically why you don't see it as a blade material except in specialized case.

Wow! Nice work on those Striders indeed!
I agree with a previous poster that trying to thin out the titanium liners would not be a good idea as gaps will happen.

Thanks for all the kind words guys!! It's been a while since I've done others. If anyone wants theirs to look like that just shoot me a email and we can work it out!! It only takes a few hours so turn around time is mailed back same or next day!! You should see what I can do to Spyderco Guntings;)
Take Care All!!
Todd
