Just wondering if any of the Tantung samples had been given out yet and if anyone had ground a blade from it.

Always think of your fellow knife makers as partners in the search for the perfect blade, not as people trying to compete with you and your work!

Hadn't heard anything at all, yet. I'm really hoping to get a sample of this stuff--it sounds really great, but I wonder how it'll be in hand.

I haven't heard anything from them. Maybe there was to much of a response, but they posted it, we didn't ask them to do it. I've haven't gotten any e-mail from them either. Think I'll head out to the shop and work with some common everyday stainless. Later.

Here is a thread on Tantung® from a long time back where I asked about the Tantung.......
http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum12/HTML/000532.html

I am still wondering about the softer center. and the sometimes a bit pourous core, has been addressed by the Tantung® manufacturer.

Tantung® worked well for any cutting tool ground from the end like box tool, cutoff, shave and dovetail tools. The shave and dovetail tools were cast roughly to shape so only a little material was ground off the outside surfaces to finish them for close tolerance work.
Any tool bits like flat form tools where the material had to be ground from the side when resharpening had a very short lifetime due to the softer center in the Tantung®.

When I used it in the shop it came in 2 grades. Tantung-G® & Tantung-144® I think it was.
The Tantung-144® was a little less heat tolerant, but had more shock resistance IIRC.

Anything cast in the proper shape of a knife would work fantastically I believe.
And the makers of Tantung® back then offered the castings to shape as well and IIRC it was due to the same concerns I am asking about here.

It will be interesting to see how it all turns out.
And I sure wish I had kept all the info I had on the Tantung products when I retired, but a man can only keep so much paper work.

Strange, I got a piece of Tantung within a few days of that post. I haven't taken time to grind it but I am impressed with the beginning material. Flat, precision ground (.125) and just the right size. I plan to do a folder in it, Talonite, and Stellite 6K and see how they compare.
More to follow.

I haven't heard anything either and, alot of us probably won't. @40.00 a foot? I don't think they'll be handing it out like mints at a restaurant. I still will give it a try even if I have to buy it. It would be nice if they had a introductory price to afford first-time buyers the opportunity to try it.

They emailed me and I emailed back with a bunch of questions......seems the pieces they are sending out are 2nds with surface imperfections.......and that it does grind without too much difficulty... I am worried that it will be brittle, not only from the formula but also what Rob Simonich said a while back....but keeping an open mind

like the rest, I am waiting (for Ed McMahon to show up at my door!!!!!!

Tom, the stuff I got last year and tried was very brittle, you could actually HEAR the chips flying off over a brass rod with light pressure. They are saying they have a much tougher material now, but I guess I will never know as I have never been offered a sample of the new material. I would have loved to try it and see how much tougher they have made it. I still have one piece of the old stuff left and could have done a direct comparrison. Oh well!

If i get it soon enough Ill make a knife and bring it to oregon and we can test it out on the bathroom sink at the motel!!!!!!

I got an email saying what they got more in, not PG stuff, but had some small pits or scale, but i hope to grind it over Easter break and let you guys know!

I feel that unless you have ground Stellite and Talonite, and then grind the Tantung sample like Simonich, Mayo and myself have done, what are you gonna compare it to?
I'm anxious to grind the Tantung sample, just gotta find the time. I " touched " it to a 977 belt and it seemed to grind fine, but then, so did that weird piece of material that Rob Simonich sent me. Ferro something or other.

I was surprised also. I have heard nothing since asking to be included- email or otherwise. Strange behavior on this forum.

I haven't heard anything either. I believe they will probably give samples to the better known makers and have them hype the product to others. My opinion.

I rec'd an E-mail on 15 March saying the samples would be sent out shortly as they had just been rec'd from the foundry.
They are described as having imperfections/scale which can be easily ground off and are not what would be typical of later quantities. That is future orders would be cleaner.
Does any-one have any info on hazards regarding this materials dust?
