has anyone tried this steel

Bruce, I would think its a type of air hardening steel. Not sure how that would work. Do what any knifemaker would do, save it.
 
This is a manganese type [ 3% Mn] air hardening steel. One advantage for you would be lower hardening temperature of 1450-1550 F, annealing temp 1360-1400 F. Mixing an air hardening steel with an oil hardening may give you problems .
