Has anyone used International Paper brand micarta?

Maybe I'm remembering wrong, but I think the only "real" Micarta was from International Paper Company. IIRC, they patented and trademarked "Micarta" back in the 1930's and the trademark expired in the early 2000's. That is why lots of stuff is now legally sold as Micarta.

Thanks Stacy, it looks like it will work. I'm going to cut off a couple pieces and test them out. I figured if they sucked for handles I could make work rests and bench tops out of them.

Stacy- I believe Westinghouse held the trademark on the name "Micarta."

It's good stuff, but different from the old Westinghouse stuff. Yes they bought out the brand, but EPA rule changes on chemicals, and equipment/staff changes made the end result different. Feel confident using it as being much better quality than "micarta" of unknown origin, but don't expect it to add a lot of value to your knives. Although in fairness, basic natural/brown canvas vintage stuff isn't particularly valuable yet, as it doesn't exhibit as many particular characteristics (color changes, etc.), unless you find something that's got a unique weave or something that makes the look unique, and there's lots more of it floating around than any of the less common types (paper of certain colors, ivorite, certain linen (maroon, butterscotch) etc.).

You can buy all the Canvas Micarta you can pay for brand new from Norplex any day of the week, they make excellent stuff. Thats where I get my Micarta.

I have no doubt canvas micarta is readily available, I was just kind of hoping this was great quality old stock.
I'll slice a couple pieces off and put them through some testing.
