Has Damascus Steel Peaked

I feel its kind of expected of you if you forge. My forging "skill" is lightyears behind where it needs to be to do Damascus and its something i cant wait to try

But sometimes they use nickel. :p

Without Damascus, I'd probably still be making $300-400 hunting knives. It really depends on what 'knife making' is for You. For me it's been a full time job since 1991. Damascus puts more groceries in the house.

AND

AND still living in the Greater Tallahassee FL-GA-AL Metroplex. Blech!! :p
Hahaha :D No I moved to Mo a few years before I started making Damascus. But if I'd have stayed down there I would not have had the time or motivation to be a full time maker. My first knives were $25-$45.

Too many fish, not enough time? :D There is still custom knife maker listed in the Blade directory who lives in Key West. I'm not sure how he has the time or the money to pull that off unless he retired from Microsoft at age 30. LOL

Knives only have value if you can sell them for more than you paid.

Using damascus and other high end materials insures lasting value.

Damascus itself is a form of art, long gone are the days were it was necessary to refine dirty steel by forging and folding.

Pattern development has slowed some in the last few years but there is still lots of new ideas out there.

More makers of damascus are including high tech materials in their steel, which I think is where things are trending right now.

A piece of advice though, don’t start making damascus or you will be a prisoner to the addiction that comes from making it.
