Has Emerson taken it up a notch?

That's odd, because you should be able to put a good edge on any blade, as long as the correct angle is used. If i cannot take a good edge, the bevel may not be done correctly. Even then it would just need to be re profiled. If yours is not beveled correctly, you can send it back to Emerson, and they will fix it. It would be a shame for a nice RH to sit in a drawer forever.

All of my Emersons are at least razor sharp. I find they tend to be sharper out of the box than most other brands. Maybe you just got the odd one that has a problem.

I got my roadhouse razor sharp again today. Re profiled it to to approximately 23 degrees. I'm now a happy camper again!:D

My Emerson's fit and finish were always fine. Solid knives with middle of the road steel. The new prices for them are absolutely insane and I would never pay that much. 230 for a commander?

The 2014 CQC-7A I sent back for resharpening was much better than the Emersons I went through last year. I think some of them may have been from 2012. The liners were still kinda rough, and the jimping wasn't quite perfect, but it was otherwise nice. The liner lock seemed like it was wearing kind of fast, but I'm hoping it'll stay right where it is for now.

The most important part, is that it came very sharp from the factory, something that can't be said for the other ones I've tried.
