Has fiction piqued your interest in survival?

Yes it has.
I remember reading a book when I was a kid about a man left for dead in a bombing exercise area (somwhere in Nevada I think).
He had to survive naked in that hostile environment making his way back to "civilisation" for revenge. Sorry I don`t know the book`s title.
That was one of the first books that sparked my intrest in survival.

I hope I'm not stealing Sgt. Art's thunder, but this is one of my favorites, too.

In a nutshell, a comet collides with Earth and the novel follows a few groups of survivors in the aftermath. Unlike a lot of end-of-world novels, though, this one doesn't introduce the disaster (comet strike) until about 1/3 of the way in.

I hope this doesn't take the thread off-topic, but since I created it... :D

My favorite survival/end-of-world/apocalypse novels (in no particularly order):

A Canticle for Leibowitz
A Dusk of Demons
A Wrinkle in the Skin
Alas, Babylon
Day of the Triffids (MUCH better than the awful B-movie)
Dies the Fire (and sequels)
Earth Abides
Empty World
Hatchet (and sequels)
Lucifer’s Hammer
Malevil (rare European end-of-world novel)
My Side of the Mountain
On the Beach
Pendulum
Riddley Walker
Shiva Descending
Some Will Not Die (rare urban survival novel [as opposed to rural survival])
Swan Song
The Death of Grass
The Long Winter
The Odyssey Project
The Postman
The Prince in Waiting (and sequels)
The Rift
The Sixth Winter
The Stand
The White Mountains (and sequels)
The Wild Shore
Tunnel in the Sky
Warday
Wolf and Iron

I tip my hat to you MG Saldivar, you are well read in this genre. I have about 90% of the books on your list in my collection, and look forward to researching the ones I do not.

In return, you might find these also an interesting read, if you have not done so already.

Into the Looking Glass
Into the Forest
On to Plan B
Damnation Alley (Book not movie, although I lust after the Landmaster).
Patriots - Surviving the coming collapse
The Nature of Balance
Moonseed
Tomorrow when the war began
Heat
Judgement Day
Black Dawn
Wolf of shadows (Teen level, but still an interesting read).
The New Madrid Run
Deep Fathom
Red Shadows
Aftermath
Ill Wind
Advent

Tomorrow when the war began

Thanks, Bladewolf, I forgot to list this. An excellent series, although, with respect, the Australian kids' mania for NOT carrying firearms was completely outside my own worldview.

Agreed. There are a few I've read that try to slip in the thought that gun control would help lesson the impact of a serious catastrophe. Of course, history continually proves this false. Survival, by nature, requires a realistic outlook on the human condition.

Out of the Ashes series by the late William W. Johnstone, Jerry Ahearn's The Survivalist (I have all the books in both series above) and just scored a copy of Lucifer's Hammer on Ebay for a penny plus $3.50 shipping.

Kinda sounds like Deathwatch in it a young hunting guide's client acidently shoots an old hermit and the hunter makes the guy strip down, he later finds a slingshot that he uses to defend himself against the hunter.

Both excellent series Suzanne, I think I still have both around somewhere, but I only officially collect non-series due to space limitations. The Guardians series, by Victor Milan AKA Richard Austin, is also good. After thinking about it, I'd add the Battle Circle Trilogy by Piers Anthony, Blood Crazy, By Dawns Uncertain Light, the Last Ship, the third Pandemic, and Riddley Walker to my list.
