Has my Edge Brand 469 lost temper?

I have owned an Edge Brand 469 Bowie for many years. Long ago I had a friend sharpen it. I don't know what he did to it, but when I got it back (months later) it was no longer bright and polished but was a dull grey color. Does this mean it has lost its temper or hardness? What can I do to restore it to its former glory? Thanks!

Hi Dave welcome to the forum. By the sounds of it, he may have scratched it and then tried to polish the scratches out and wasn't able to get it to the mirror polish it originally was. I may be wrong hopefully someone with more experience will chime in, but I believe the metal is fine, it's just the finish he messed up.

Well, I finally pulled my old 469 out of where it has been stored for 22 years. To my surprise it isn't as damaged as I remembered. It is grayish, like it was badly polished. I will try polishing it tomorrow and see if I can get it to a better finish than it currently has. I'd love to get it to the original mirror finish, but doubt I can get it that nice.

If you post pictures, I can tell you how to do it.

Welcome to Shop Talk Drifter.

I have to comment that it would have made more sense to post your thread after examining the knife, not from as 22 year old memory of what it looked like :)

IIRC, those German knives were takedown style. If that is right, it would be best to disassemble the knife and polish the blade. If you are not set up for, and experience in, buffing an polishing a large blade it would be best to get a knifemaker near you to do it for you.

Fill out your profile and maybe a maker near you will offer to help.
