has stag lost its place with "new" folders??

They're just as nice looking (when new) but the problem is they don't wear like Sambar, nor do they resist shrinkage/warpage/age as well.
Besides the outer bark-for looks, and size, stag is typically graded by quality.
Better pieces have less Pith (the soft, foamy looking junk on the inside that doesn't ever really stabilize properly.)
Sambar is naturally less pithy and more resistant to..everything than any other type of stag. That's what makes it so desirable as a handle material vs other antler and horn materials.

Yeah, sambar is OK I guess...:D

The absolutely crushing thing about that sambar export ban is that it came about because knuckleheads were shooting the sambar to get their horns...they they shed.

You don't want to be seen at the mall flicking your tacticool knife open and your friends noticing old fashioned stag scales. Just ruins the whole Rambo experience.

Quite the opposite.
I think stag handles add to the Rambotastic feel of it. ;)

The story I heard was that the stag gatherers were burning the "prairie" to find the shed antlers. Hence the export ban. They needed to find some stag sniffing dogs.

That was the story I heard. It wasn't so much poaching as sambar shed like other deer. But you can imagine what burning large swaths of grassland in a country where there is less of that every day might do.

Stag has never appealed to me. It's actually a deal-breaker for me. I prefer wood or Micarta or g10. I know it's supposed to be "premium" material but I don't like the aesthetics of it. To me it's like a flint knapped caveman knife...I appreciate the effort it takes to make it but that doesn't make me want it...there are so many better looking, more practical options.

FYI, 2 year old thread (though I largely agree with you).

I like the look and texture of stag, but, being an organic material, I worry about long term stability.

By "long term," I mean decades. I have a lot more confidence that properly attached G10 or micarta scales won't warp, crack, shrink, or pull-away after 20 years than stag scales.

What modern folders come with stag as a regular thing? Stag to me reads as material for traditional knife scales. I have several slipjoints with stag scales, can't say I've ever seen what you'd consider a modern knife with them.
Stag is mostly used with traditional knives and typically considered a premium handle material. As far as modern knives go, I have a LionSteel small Opera with stag handles. I consider it pretty traditional as it is basically a slip joint lock back. Some may consider it a modern knife?

The Sambar stag supply has been greatly reduced and you're seeing a lot more elk "stag" these days. Now I see that this thread is a couple years old. Oh well....
