Has the Inova X5 been eclipsed?

I think one of the strongest points of the X5 and X5T is the low price, so adding a Luxeon would hurt that. However, If they made a new model with the Luxeon, that would complete the Inova lineup. They would have low, medium, and high priced lights. And I'm sure the high priced model wouldn't be too bad.

No, not really eclipsed. It all depends on what your use or focus is. That's a pretty common piece of advice, but it especially lies true in flashlights. For the X5, you get a wide angle flood beam, with not a super long throw distance. It is nice for lighting up a whole room so you don't have to move the light around to find things. The new X1, on the other hand, is a super-focused beam that is on the opposite spectrum of uses.

I'd say that its construction and durability are top-notch, so you really can't go wrong.

I agree with arcteryx79...it depends on what your needs are. As an emergency or disaster preparedness light, I don't think it has been eclipsed. The X5 advertises something like 20 hours of light on one pair of CR123. Any 1W LS would probably give you less than 3 hours. If I needed to use a flashlight all night I know which one I would pick. And lithium batteries are supposed to be good for ten years so you will have less worry about having dead batteries, although most alkalines have expiration dates of about 7 years so that might not be a big difference.

Its true that the X5 doesn't throw light like the newer Luxeon LEDs, but if you are working on tasks within an arm's length in the dark then the X5 should be enough light.

Of course if you wanted to carry around a big 2D size light, get the Elektrolumens Blaster-1R or Anglelux. 24 hours of 1W LED power off of 2 D size batteries.

how is the "throw"/effective range of the new X1 compared to the X5T? assuming that the LED color is the same. thanks.

I'de guess that the X1 puts out a lot less light than the X5, simply because the X5 runs 5 LEDs on 2 3V lithiums. However, for effective range, the X1 might have longer throw because of the lens it uses.

But the intended use for the two is very different, I would think, the X1 has basically no sidespill, so it's not a very good area light.

When I first got my X5 I thought it was the greatest thing since spicy V-8. Then it started flickering. I think it sucks, because of that. I gave it to my nephew.

I had the same thing happen with mine. However, I sent it in and they replaced it for free. Its lived in the car since I got my KL1.
