Has the internet changed the game?

Yes it has created great demand for makers products that far exceed the supply and made instant stars of new and not fully developed makers long before they would achieve success without it.
It also has created a lot of fad of the moment makers that fade as the group moves to the next greatest maker. Seems to me that there are a lot of unsophisticated buyers in the market today that are only following the trend, and are low on knowledge of knives. Don't know if that is all bad, since it helps keep up demand-just an observation.

Definitely go for the long haul Colin. The internet has changed things drastically. We use to spend $1,000 to $2,000 a month on print advertising. Don't do that anymore at all. Quit our last magazine ad this year. When you spend $600 plus a month (discount rate for multiple ads throughout the year) and you get a phone call or two wanting a brochure from that $600, well that doesn't pencil out.

Facebook for us hasn't been all that great for us but Instagram has. It does take time and a maker has to set aside some time every day to nurture these avenues but it can pay off. Its free and you will reach way more folks than printed avenues.

The down sides have been mentioned already. Lots of charlatans and fly by nighters that hurt all of us.
That's the plan the goal is full time!
Not going to be easy, but in really tired of working for other people. So its gonna be worth it!

This isn't "all bad" at all. There have always been mostly unsophisticated knife buyers and it will remain so.

agreed and it wasn't meant as an insult-we all started somewhere and I doubt it was with full knowledge of the subject. Buyers are buyers and help keep the whole thing afloat. It is often hype driven demand which is less stable-which was what I really was getting at and likely how I should have said it

Goodluck with that. I know it must be a scary thought to solely rely on the funds you get from knife making to live. Although in my opinion life is all about living how you want and doing what makes you the happiest. You do some nice work by the way. Nice and simple functional designs that just scream to be used.

Yea it's a scary plunge. I'm excited and nervous to take it.

Thank you! Yeah I make stuff to be used! No mirror polish or funky nightmare grinds. Function over form. But form is still important.
