Has this ever happened to you?

This is pretty much a description of the outlook I had. It had to be close to a hundred dollars or more, otherwise I would snurl my nose at it. For a while, I had a thing for super steels. There is nothing wrong with enjoying high end knives, but I am focusing more on blades that fit my needs.
See I've never actually gotten into higher end knives.
When I was starting out I believed the only good knives were the higher end options which I could never afford, then I learned how inexpensive many really great knives are and never felt the need for anything more expensive.

I actually didn't like the skull design 3504 (just not a skull aficionado) but just purchased the 2nd anniversary 3504 with purple/bronze ano milled scales (plain). The CH 3504 literally has a cult following. I have a CH 3500, and it's the smoothest flipper I have, compared to my ZT 0392, Brous Insight, Reate K-1, CKF Ratata to just name a few. If a knife has good fit and finish and performs well, the labels don't matter. The CH Tianyi is very good as well, but a rung down. There are a lot of inexpensive >$100 knives that really float my boat. Anyway, I like my CH 3500 so much I'm going to send it off for scale-sculpting and cerakote. Hope I don't ruin it!

Oh, and you can follow CH on instagram, look for CH kinfe (yes, kinfe!).

Yes I don't like the skull on that knife either. I wish they just made it plain.

But I have two of them and you know what? For $76. the knife is just INSANE for what you get.. totally insane!

Lately I've noticed that the older I get the smaller, lighter, and less tactical my edc folders get. Also my taste for big heavy fixed blades is waning.

Tastes will naturally change as we get into the hobby. Makes it even more fun to see the changes in our purchasing habits.
Autos, assisted, slippies etc. Lots of fun!
What I have also really enjoyed is watching my sons get into them also! And watching how their tastes develop.
Seems I am still interested in the mid range offerings. $100 - $400 seems to be my comfort zone.

Purchased on a known counterfeiting site. Awesome!
That doesn't mean it's not an original design by a decent manufacturer. Some people just can't get distribution networks, which doesn't mean it won't happen. It's easy enough to avoid clones, but there's no need to punish artisans. I've gotten to be more than familiar with Chinese rip-offs by reviewing photo equipment for manufacturers. I quickly learned how easy it is to lift a CAD design on a thumb drive and stick it on a CNC machine and duplicate a ball head in about 5 hours. That also means that those designs are being manufactured in China.

Yes, the quality is off the charts at times. He does make the 3504 plain now. He had 2 designs before, the skull in 3 colors, and what looked like a map of Malaysia in bright blue. I love my plain 3500, but it is plain. Anyway, he now has the 3504 in plain milled Ti, in aqua, bronze/purple and plain Ti. Available on DH gate for around $60. He's also bringing out a pebble finish. For those who don't like Chinese knives, stay the hell away. Otherwise, CH makes some nice knives. He also seems to either OEM or rebrand some lower end knives. After years reviewing in the photo industry, I've found how incredibly incestuous it is, and it gets confusing to say the least. I knew one manufacturer design a tripod from the ground up - and it was duplicated exactly by the time he brought it to market. They didn't even bother changing the colors of the ano highlights. Only the parts were of lower quality (but physical duplicates). That's what happens if you manufacture in China. CNC makes it possible to bring a product to market in hours.

BTW, the only place to buy the Rike 1701 right now is on DH or Alibaba whatever. I'm sure soon he'll cut off the Chinese distributors and sell the knife in the US for $300 instead of $175. But, it's a real Rike, and the only place you can grab one unless you want to spend another $100 on eBay from somebody that waited the 2 weeks to get it. DH sells fakes, Amazon sells fakes. I'm not going to cut off my nose to spite my face.

That's some great info! Thanks for the heads up on the new plain 2504's . I am going shopping now for the white and plum colored ones..

The only real change has been my top-end price. When I started buying, it was roughly $200. Now, it's $500. That said, I'd have to really like a knife to spend that much. In general, I see a knife that appeals to me (for whatever reason) and if the price and the level of appeal match up, I might buy it. and I might not.

I went from 1-2k tactical folders to traditional bowies and slipjoints.
