You're going through the forum, and for some reason, you start reading threads about a topic in which you have no real interest. Take fixed blades, for example.

I have no need for an outdoors fixed blade knife. I don't camp. I don't hunt. I don't fish. I don't go hiking in the woods. I don't have any need to start a fire with kindling or a fire steel. I certainly don't need to baton firewood (OK, most of the other guys don't either but that's another story). Yet I start reading some thread, and the next thing I know, I'm online shopping for a fixed blade knife!

And if it happened to you, what did you end up buying as a result?

In my case, all my Spyderco, Buck, Case, and Benchmade knives came about this way. Oh, does the Ritter RSK Mk 1 with orange handles count as a Benchmade? Well, that too.

So you don't camp, hunt, fish, hike, make fires, etc...So....why are you here? :)

P.S. Yes that has happened..I didn't care about folders and now I want a spyderco. I never bought one though...

i had no interest in fixed blades since i already had a 5160 that covered all my bases for my camping needs until i read about bark rivers so ended up getting a brkt wet enviro in orange g10.

I have no use for half of my knives but I still bought them and plan on buying more. Having a love for knives joining BF is usually not a good combo ;)

even if you never go hiking, camping etc.. I can see some benefits if you have already bought one

1) sweet as kitchen knife, like it will look mean, and cut mean - impress yoru friends at a BBQ, don't use a spatula - use a fixed blade
2) ready for the Zombies stuf like that
3) ultra garden tool

and to answer your question I pretty much got into knives by reading a thread, next thing I knew Iw as looking at all brands of knives....

I find that I wan to try out new things that I dont do when on this forum. It is good to get input and suggestions about new blades but usually I but what I can see and touch. I dont like to but something on someone elses word if I cant fondle it first.

I first saw, then held, then purchased, the 741 Onslaught. I absolutely do not need it but I wanted it. On the other hand my wife complains every time I purchase a knife, so with this purchase I explained to her that I finally purchased an all around knife that we can both use as it is perfect as a kitchen chopper for at home and in the camper. It is compact (folding) and easier to carry and store than the other steak knives we carry in the camper and when at home when resting it on the counter we can close it for safety? :) It is ergonomic, comfortable to hold and will last a lifetime.

Now if I can only come up with a story to cover the 8600 Bedlam, Kershaw/Emerson auto Commander, Kershaw Offset, Spyderco Forrester and Benchmade 111H2O that I purchased. I know I can work camping and boating into a couple of them.

I don't hunt, fish, camp, make fires, etc.
Those things are illegal where I live, except fishing. Yes, making a fire is illegal.
And I bought a Mora last week.

You must be Dutch. Like me. :D

Yep. It's weird reading about people here going hunting and camping in the wild.

People carrying a pistol or revolver as their EDC.
Then reading about some kid being arrested for carrying a crossbow over here and people agreeing.

ESEE knives izula and ESEE-4
and I'm looking into buying some moras

I have no need for these knives...and my small sebenza is getting jealous...

Most of my knives were purchased for aesthetics, appreciation of craftsmanship, historic interest, collecting, or simply out of curiosity.

If I were to only buy knives that were necessary for using outdoors, well, I have one already that works just fine. So I'd have to get rid of 300+ extra knives and would never need to buy another. :)

you do'nt need to be a woodie to love knives. there is something primal & very sensual about the blade.it is only an eyeblink in time since most of mankind depended on the blade edge to perform many of his tasks each day. luckily i was able to spend much of my time when young running the boonies. however one of the most renown bowie collectors of all time william williamson was a pharmacist.

This happens to me all time time. I find I have little use for fixed blades these days (don't do as much camping as I used to and don't stay in the bush for as long when I do, so folders have been working just fine for me) but I still love checking out threads about all kinds of different fixed blades... I've been looking over the fiddleback forge galleries a lot, too, lately...

I bought a Kabar and a Gerber Mk.II that I had absolutely no use for a little while ago, but I've since sold them both...

Yeah, i have never been interested in Spyderco, always thought their knives were ugly as sin, but the more time i spend on here the more i am looking into spyderco knives, trying to find one that looks aesthetically pleasing, i think i'm going to try out a stretch.

That is weird considering all the things that ARE legal in some places over there.

Yep. They don't mind us stoned or drunk, or buying or selling sex. They just don't like us armed or appearing in any way able to take care of ourselves.

haha most of my purchases have come about this way, I will read about something in a thread, go research it a bit on my own and before I know it Im buying another knife...sometimes when I dont need to be buying one. In fact its happening as we speak, am trying to buy my fist Busse as a result of exactly what you described haha
