Has this guy accidentially stumpled over the Snakeskin recipe??

The Tac handles really show off the patterns in Snakeskin micarta! My favorite by far.

Looking at my two snakeskin handled knives I can see a difference in thickness in the layers, I think this is a key note as to why its not working. Its very difficult to repeat a layer when its compressed, so many variables have to be met for it to work properly and not look off in one way or another. You can see these variables in other layered micartas and G10 of the same colors, yet when machined they look so different.

Man. All I have is this old stinky 10 year old pair of grips...

But who would want snake skin like this?

I've got a really good looking plastic set from my fathers Thompson 1911 that I'd be willing to trade out for those awful things!

yep, I'ma giver. :p

Donate all your snakeskin blades to me and I'll reverse engineer the scales.

The more blades you send me, the greater chance for success. The blades will be non-returnable of course due to the process.

Simple right. I agree it looks simple. We have tried numerous times to replicate the mistake that was snakeskin (both on our own as well as with 3 or 4 micarta manufacturers) and have had no luck. The process of repeating snakeskin is something I have been working on for years and believe me, if I ever figure it out you guys will be the first to know.

Garth

I hear you, looking simple does not always equal being simple:eek:, and I look forward to that mystery being solved. :)

Garth, there is a micarta out in the wild that is close...closer than anything else currently, and it is called Python micarta. Looks pretty damn good, actually. Maybe, and if you can locate the source, a chat with that manufacturer might provide some good info?? :)

I bought some of that just to see it up close out of curiosity. The python micarta looks like the layers were sandwiched with slightly offset opposing diamondplate to achieve the metal lath appearance.

It's not only in the layering and color order, I think it has a lot to do with how it's machined too! Awesome stuff!!! Wish they made more mags.
