Has this happen to any of you?

Last week I took a shot in the dark with a folder, I've known of the maker but never gave any of his designs much attention in the past.

I picked up a Jim Burke Rockstar (production) from a member here on the forums, it seemed well within my style/likings for a folder and I figured why not try it out?

I have a modest collection (mostly Emerson, ZT, Hinderer...etc etc) and I try and use everything (no safe queens) but this has been the only thing I've carried since the day it got here. I'm blown away by this knife and a bit mad that I didn't try one sooner.

So has this happen to any of you? where you took a blind shot at a knife/company that you weren't really drawn towards and ended up absolutely loving it?

This thing has pretty much turned me into an instant Jim Burke fan!

A few mandatory photos.

Well It happened to me with my buck 482 ( not counting the fact that edc multiple knives )
And has now happened to me with my jackmaster Barlow.

"This" happens to me all the time actually, with my custom fixed blades. I'm always buying from a maker I haven't before and discovering that I've been missing out big time on his past knives...and for me, it's really more of a total package thing...with an emphasis on aesthetics/design/materials/fit & finish. I know the knives are going to cut things well, and I have too many to truly use for more than light EDC tasks, so most of knives are safe queens...or hip queens, if you will, as I rotate open carrying all of them. I think "this" is one of the reasons we knife lovers do what we do...it's fun to discover new, unexpected avenues, as they typically lead to bigger/better things than we would have been exposed to had we stayed on our more tried & true paths. That's deep. It may be crap, but man, it's deep crap.

Yes, it happened to me with Spartan Blades. I had a $50 gift card burning a hole in my wallet, so I took a leap of faith and bought a Phrike without doing any research. Now it's one of my favorite fixed blades:thumbup:

It happened to me a couple of weeks ago. On YT i saw a dealer alert vid of Wavestar64. It went about a massdrop offering for a Proelia folding knife. Never heard of the brand but somehow my attention was drawn. 2 weeks ago the knife arrived. And for $90 it turned out to be a well build knife. Good fit & finish and very smooth action on bearings. It wasn't the design that i particulary found attractive, but the fact i didn't know anything about this brand. But this experience let me want the other model Proelia offers. A very positive experience.

Freeman 451 BLF did it to me. I looked at it, took a gamble and man, did it pay off. I honestly thought it was a little expensive for what it was until I got it in hand. Easily the highest quality folder in my collection and amazingly fun to play with.

Never mind, I missed the part about taking a blind shot with a company.
I had already owned buck and imperial knives previously.

So while I didn't take a blind shot in the dark with them, the buck did become a knife that I couldn't bring myself not to carry.
( luckily the traditional section got me to carry some neglected knives, and I was able to give the 283 a break )
And now the jackmaster Barlow is really becoming a new favorite.

I hope I'm gonna feel the same with a Viper Start I'm about to order... For the price range the knife look great !

Udiver, I love this Jim Burke Rockstar !

Blues Bender, thanks to you I'm about to pull the trigger on a Kiku Hayate !

Yeah I just started collecting knives last year. I first bought a Kershaw Amplitude 2.5 by Tood Rexford just something to have in my pocket in case I needed it. Little did I know what I had started lol. Soon after I baught a SR2 A Lion Steel witch is a beautiful knife for sure but as I was looking at all the new Tactical type knives out there I would go to the videos to look at what they were like. There was always a video or two for Great Eastern Cutlery so I started checking them out too.Needless to say I was hooked at the first one I bought last month The #6 Pemberton also I've just picked up The #98 C.C. SFO Texas Camp Knife and have the #16 canoe in the mail on its way lol I still like the Tactical knives a bought but I love the GEC Traditionals there all I carry now.

Nice guys!

Seems that a lot of us had this same situation happen to us.

I guess the saying is right "You need to try everything at least once" same goes for knives I guess.

The Viper looks great, seems like it could be a nice EDC knife since its a bit thin, love the blade shape!

Took the plunge with Brous Blades a few months ago & got a division flipper. Cant say enough about the knife & im glad I ordered outside my BM MT comfort zone hehe. That Jim Burke Rockstar is a beauty.

A similar thing happened to me with Spyderco, and it's actually what opened my eyes to the rest of the knife world, led me here, and made me a knife nut. After owning a Benchmade 721 Tanto (not sure if it was the 721, but it's the same knife as the 720/721 with a tanto blade, first production, still have it) for 15 years and never having a single issue with it, I just kind of assumed that I should be as unequivocally loyal as my 721 was and stick to Benchmade. Working at a BM dealer, I got them cheap. I bought about 3 different colors of Mini-Grips, two regular Grips (one an H2O), and a 940.

Then, a coworker asked if I'd be interested in trading him my 940 for a Spyderco Manix 2 XL. I told him no, but that I'd trade him a regular Griptilian (non-H2O) and a Mini-Griptilian for it. I fell in love with that Manix 2 XL that day, and have never looked back. It opened my eyes to the fact that there are other companies worth spending my money on. I always knew that, but never actually would have spent money on something else. Now I love Spyderco just as much, have purchased many other non-Benchmades (and some more BMs), and have also opened my mind up to every other brand/maker out there.

ZT for me. Was planning on getting my next Spyderco or an Emerson when I saw a ZT350 on the forum for sale. Am impulse buy and four days later, they were and still are my favorite brand.

You will, I have two of the Viper's and love them they are a little large for most folks but the quality is amazing for the price. Also the 690 steel they use holds a wicked edge.

Happened to me with Brous!! Not much Brous love around here, but I saw a VR-71 on the Exchange for a good price and grabbed it......love it!! Smoothest flipper I own! Had Steve K make an awesome set of scales for it I liked it so much!

Same here, I bought a Brous Reloader because I was afraid they might not be available for too long and I'm glad I did.

Did not happen... Got an Emerson Jungle Commander instead! I was really impressed by my Super Roadhouse so I guess it is the same kind of feeling. The brutal efficiency and fit and finish of Emerson's appeal to me like no other brand, so far. I guess I need down and dirty and classy blades in these times of my life!
