Hasco's Fiddleback Mid Tech Hiking Buddy Pass Around Review

Thanks Brian! The hiking buddy has always been one of my favorite Fiddleback models. I wasn't very clear in my initial review, so I have edited it. I found a way to draw on the pics for clarification. The issue with the hot spots was from the scales and not from the spine. The finish where the scales meet the spine is perfect. I only experienced the hot spots after extended use and I could see how it might not create the same problem for different hands.

Ok, I get what you're saying now. I thought that bright line was the sun telling on a slightly proud spine, which would have been extremely unusual for FF.

Very nice, thorough review Hasco.
Great write up and some great pics!
I'm looking forward to giving this knife a try.

Man, what a review Hasco. Thank you. To get the handle shape for each of the production knives, I made a sample knife and sent it in to be lazer scanned. I patterned the handle for the HB from a much thicker iteration of the handmade knife than the one you have. Of course, I can't make the machines carve something as good as what we do by hand. Our handmade handles are a very intensive process. I'm sure you've seen pictures. Maybe Peter or Bud or someone who has been in the shop to see it happen will chime in. Handle shaping is half of my week. Then from me it goes to the hand sanding crew, and they spend quite a bit of time on them also. I don't know of another company that does so much of the work by hand as we do. I think it shows, and it really isn't possible for the production knives to match it.

Your spoon is phenomenal. Very impressive.

Here is one of my favorite photos of Andy shaping handles.....taken at the old shop:
