Hatamoto bladeplay and .22 cal

No I didn't shoot my Hatamoto to fix the bladeplay. ;) I love this folder, but there was a little vertical bladeplay. I disassmbled it and put it back together. I tightened the pivot but there was still wobble. I even bent the liner further out; this helped but there was still vertical movement. My last option was to thicken the blade stop. I was looking for a metal sleeve that would fit over the blade stop. A .22 cal casing was perfect. I cut off a 4mm length from the shell and slid it over the blade stop. Voila! Its perfect with no blade play. You can probably use this for other folders that develop blade play.

Very MacGuyver...
but wouldn't you rather defer to Cold Steel and let them address the problem since it's a relatively expensive folder?
Does the aftermarket alteration void the warranty?

My warranty already expired so I don't think CS would have done anything so it doesn't matter even though I have modified it. It works good as new now.

Excellent remedy, please let us know how it works in the long run :)

Any chance for pictures?

Huh? Cold steel essentially has a lifetime warranty on manufacture defects... Just send it back with a note expaining the problem and the usually make it right.

Neat idea. I'll also be interested to hear how the soft brass of a .22 casing holds up over time.

When I first experimented with thickening the blade stop I used a straw. It stopped the blade play but I obviously knew it wouldn't hold up to any cutting. The brass is soft but I hope it will hold up. I've chopped some vegetables with it and its ok. I will have to try something harder in the near future. If the brass fails I will have to find something sturdier. Will keep you posted.

So far so good. My hatamoto has held up. I was fixing my gate in the backyard. Due to the winter the fence post has shifted and I couldn't get the gate to open without rubbing against the frame. I used the hatamoto to bevel the gate frame. Pressure treated wood didn't stand much up against the knife. The lock held up fine without bladeplay, which means the brass is doing fine.
