I finally got my tarp hat and I'm diggin' it. I made a hatband for it last night outta para, but I just didn't like the look. I was wanting to put a small misch steel in the band and my ESEE AH1, but I am slap outta ideas. I've checked Stormdrane, and some others, but still coming up nutz.

Here is some of the ideas I had, but didn't pan out:
Firesteel in the knot work- can't get it out without total dismantle
AH1 as a clasp for closing the band- yeah, I'm a idiot
AH1 as an ornament in the front or the back- has potential
Firesteel as a closure for the loop- has potential

Anyways, I'm stumped. Has anyone done something similar to this? Any ideas or recommendations are much appreciated. I just wanted to do something cool with the band and making it a little more WS&S friendly is cool to me. Thanks. Moose

The tarp hats are cool, cool, cool  Best hat I've found for hiking in the sun. I haven't tried anything for a hat band, but I'm interested to see what you come up with

How about a length of webbing folded over lengthwise and stitched into a tube? Leaving tabs at the ends to put a snap in place or velcro, webbing buckles, what have you. What you have is a sleeve in which you can put any number of things from fero rods, line, pins and hooks, money, weights, etc. provided you devise a way to extract those things.

Nice Idea Marcelo... they actually sell Tube Webbing where you could cut a slit in one side (Melt the Fibers on both sides of cuts) slip a firesteel in, may take a little work to get it out. But it will be there when you need it.

Perhaps a little velcro to keep it closed?
They sell tubing a little up the road. Perhaps. Thanks. Moose

Slightly off topic, but here's a heads up:

Nice hat. I wear one too. But they catch the wind like a kite, and unlike Tilly, they don't give you a new one if it blows off your head.

I got an e-mail from the Real Deal people last week advertising a retention strap.

I'm going to rig up my own version, but here is a picture of theirs:

Instead of a firesteel or arrow head, have you thought about a fly fishing lure for the headband? Much lighter.

I could but, my persona is more of a firesteel, arrowhead. I got some small misch, like 1/4" by 2" that I wanna use, at like $.99, I gots a few layin' around. My ESEE arrowhead has been a puzzle to me on how to use or pack effectively. I could put it in an ASK, but I thought as a functioning fashion statement would be more appealing.

I am still trying to figure this one out. Moose

The tarp guys sell hat bands that look pretty stylish:

What do you think about the retention strap? I'm making one.

They do their job, but I don't usually use one. Windy season is coming up here, so, I'll see how it goes.

I looked at their headbands, and they do look pretty cool. I just like putting a little of "me" in my stuff, nothing stays stock long. I also like things to do more than one thing, and so far, I can think of a few things this guy can do all by itself already. I just thought it would be cool to have a few things with me on my hat.

stitch a pocket under the crown of the hat, similar to a Tilley. put the arrowhead and firesteel in the pocket. :D

or just get a Tilley!

Not sure if putting gear in a hat is a good idea. Kind of like tying gear you may need to a kite, then hoping it doesn't fly away. I think you're gonna end up giving your firesteel and AH-1 wings. ;-)

just tie a big chopper like a CB hatchet or axe, or perhaps an ESEE Junglas to the hat.

problem solved! :D

I have never tried one of those but with the rustic look, I would try some kind of woven band using jute (keeping with the fire/tinder idea) and use the smallish rod as a "toggle" lock to keep the band fastened around the hat. Maybe some kind of ring hitch or fancy interlocking reef knot??? I think you are on the right track-pictures of the winning idea are required.

OK, now we are gettin' somewhere. Thanks, I will be looking into that. The Tarp's kinda rustic, beatup lookin' (:D) and that's what I like, I guess I could dye to the color I wanted, like I did my ghillie.

That's awesme thanks Sharp, good lookin' out.

About my gear flying away, the only time I ever lost a hat was in a boat. A very fast boat that no one told me was fast. The gear on my head will be there as a backup, to a backup, to what I planned to use, so, no worries. I just thought an arrowhead and firesteel would be cool to have in a hatband and you never know, in a tough situation, it might come in handy.

Thanks to all. Moose

Do you get a free bowl of soup when you buy a hat like that?I'm sure it looks good on you though.:D

Yes I did. Broccoli and Cheese. Had some carrots and onions in it too. :D

holy crap! either missed a great chance to patent something or they saw my post / pics / story months (and months!) ago over at EDCF!

oh well...it's a great hat. I also waxed mine with Dr. Martens wonder balsam...awesome stuff. Just FYI, the hat floats just fine when it blows off in the water with the Dr. Martens stuff on it. Lucky for me...I put the Dr. Martens stuff on it pretty quick when I got it. AFTER it blew off on the water...I rescued it...THEN I put on a strap. :)

here's a couiple pics from that old thread:
I used an Izula to punch the holes and some wooden beads, and a cord lock under the chin-

and how it looks all done - the neck strap stays up in the head area until needed -

regardless of what I said at the top....I'm glad they fixed it - needed done desperately. and I like their design too - don't have to punch holes in the hat.
all in all - A great Tripping hat for me.

Maybe for the arrow head you could do a shorty kydex sheath that holds the shaft so that the head of the arrow points up on the front of the hat exposed. Then have two grommets on each side that you weave jute twine from that you connect in the back with the fire steel toggle idea.
