hey guys im in need of some advice of what kind of byrd knife i should get. Now this is different from my other thread..as i have changed my specifcations..

So if you guys could help with to select one.. id prefer the following features:

-decent for edc carry(your own opinion)
-blade is 3 inches or bigger
-is decent for a camping trip
-Your own good expierances with the recommended knife
-If possible..state what good expierances you have had with the knife (stories, situations, scenarios)

Thanks alot!

For EDC, the Meadowlark is great--meets your 3" needs, but may be a little small for camping.

The Cara Cara is great for camping--but maybe a little big for EDC.

I've been really happy with my new G10 Flight. It's sized between the Meadowlark and the Cara Cara, carries well in the pocket. Locks up tight. Hard to beat for the price.

G10 flight. I am shocked at how good the byrds are. I was comparing my SS Police and SS Crossbill and if I did not know better I would have thought the Crossbill was the more expensive knife as the connection where blade and handle meet is a lot better designed.

Another vote for the G-10 Flight. Large enough to handle the camping chores, lighter than the SS version, great lock-up, grippy texture without being abrasive, and it keeps its good looks a lot better than the stainless. I haven't had mine that long, but it seems to be headed for a permanent slot in the carry armada.

i havent handled the g10 flight, but it looks nice.

i really like the g10 byrd robin. its smaller knife, but incredibly handy and functional. in fact, the g10 robin was my main edc for quite some time at my old job. i used it for opening boxes and packages, and stuff like that. it only cost me 20 dollars as well. one of my favorites.

its the poor mans caly3, yet id take the g10 robin over the caly3 and save myself all that money.

If you are not biased against SS handles than I advise you to get SS handled Byrd (e.g. Crosbill or Caracara) instead of G-10 ones. They just seem to be of better quality.

YourNoob - I have a G-10 Robin, and it is a good knife. it sounds like that may be a bit small for you, so I would recommend a FRN Native PE. I don't know if you can get the same deal but here in the US you can get one through Walmart for US$40.00 +tax. I have one and have used almost everyday for the last month and it is still VERY sharp. As for that Sheffield thing I wouldn't bother:D
Have fun with whatever you choose, and let us know what you end up getting.

hey thanks for the suggestions guys but im kinda on a tight budget and over at new graham(im buying from canada) they got the cara cara in frn for 17 bucks, and the g10 flight for 23 and im planning on going with the cara cara in frn but im wondering, why is g10 so respected? like i heard its really comfortable yet it weights a ton campared to other handles and is almost same weight as ss. and i heard that ss gets slippery when its it comes in contact with moisture.

mrappraisit- dont worry guys ill let you guys know asap what im getitng..but hard dilemma.

G10 just feels good in the hand. It has a reassuring heft (in contrast to FRN) and good grip (as opposed to SS). I continue to hear good things about FRN (durable, indestructable, etc), but it just feels too insubstantial in my hand.

YourNoob - the G-10 scales combined with the SS liners underneath make the knife feel very solid, like it should cost $40 - $50. I was at Cabellas yesterday and I probably saw 20+ knives priced around what I paid for my robin and I am positive the Robin is at least as good as the best out of those 20.:D I am sure you will be happy with either of those two choices.

I actually recommend the FRN Cara Cara. The reason I do is because you say one of the uses is camping. While the G-10 is awesome material, it is heavy as you said. Also, the FRN is no slouch for a handle material, and the FRN Cara Cara has nested steel liners for added strength. Thus I vote for FRN with nested steel liners, for camping duty because I wouldn’t want a heavier knife for that activity. The reason I recommend the Cara Cara is also the camping. I may be wrong, but for some reason the handle-to-blade configuration of the flight just doesn’t seem to look right for a knife that would possibley be used for whittling. The Cara Cara’s blade has a more pleasant angle to it’s handle compared to the Flight’s. You may even consider a como edge, but that is a personal choice, especially since you’ll be using it in the woods, and may have to sharpen serrations (could prove problematic when away from civilization and a Sharpmaker).

OTOH: if weight doesn’t bother you, then the G-10 handle does have a better finish then the FRN, and it’s more popular if you choose to re-sell it.

thanks alot guys for the info..i think im most likely going with the frn cara cara.. thanks!

btw would u guys happen to know any other websites that have good byrd prices that ship to canada no problem? (besides new graham even tho ther super cheap!)

hey YourNoob,
I've got FRN/G10 versions of the Caracara, Meadowlark, Robin...
in general the G10 version will be somewhat sturdier/solid than the FRN one (at the expense of some extra weight)....
I'm not 100% certain but Knifeworks.com may ship to Canada...
good luck... :)

I've got the Cara Cara with FRN , no problems, great knife for the price, carries ok, and has enough blade to do some real work.

Use it like a knife and not a crowbar and you'll be fine, lol
