Hi
Could anyone recommend a great, super light camping hatchet? I'm talking something small, but useful that could be affixed to my pack for the short 3-day trips where I take comfort over speed. I guess the most important thing is its weight--needs to be light. Reliability i'm not too worried about b/c it's only hatchet work, nothing too technical. Thanks!!

I'll chime in with the Swamprat Ratchet. I love mine. It is small, and doubles well in the kitchen, too, used like an ulu. One piece construction, Res-c handle, and the Busse family warrenty. If you want to spend more, try a Paul's Hatchet from Busse combat.
I think there is a Ratchet on the For Sale forum.... :)

my friend has a gerber hatchet, i think its called the sportsman maybe... ill have to check. but it has a super light handle and a nice sheath.

The little Gerber is what I have used for years now, It has always worked well for what it is.

Don't bother w/ a hatchet, use a heavy knife if need be, or just use wood w/ a diameter = your wrist.

If you want something light, check out the Gransfors Bruks Mini Belt Hatchet. Mine weighs 15oz. See the currently active thread "Gransfors Bruk Axes" for pics.

GB Mini
It will come smaller than you were expecting and will be more versatile then you thought.

Cold steel trailhawk weighs in at only about 19.1 oz. 18" long has a hammer poll on back 2.5" cutting edge. very tough. less than $30.00 on ebay and a hell of a lot of fun to through.

The Bruks really works well. Here's a rig I built for one of my customers, a sort of "all in one" deal.

Those are standard belt rigs, 49.95, plus another 10.00 for the firesteel rig. I can do a package deal on the two sheaths and firesteel though.

One that doesn't get much playtime on the forums is the Timberline Kommer Bush Pilot survival axe. Nicely made with 440A steel, small enough to tote easily, and heavy enough & designed to do some serious chopping...........best thing? Price is under $50.00. Try www.knifecenter.com under Timberline. Well worth a look.

I got one of the small Gerber hatchets from bladematrix and I have been very happy. I have bought 4 more for guys at work and my cousin.
