Soooo comfy in the hand. I big nessie skinner made from a 19th century butcher blade that I reshaped. Natural copper on the sheath and a copper cover for the snap.

That looks real solid, and I like the wood. What's the butt cap and bolster made from?

Pullrich
The butt and bolster are bootsole leather about 12 oz treated with crazy glue. The butt cap is also tacked to the hatchet handle with escutcheon pins. It has a very solid feel in the hand as well as light and fast feeling.

very nice, I keep thinking that a GB mini ebd of handle would make a great knife handle. and you help to confirm that a hatchet handle is a great fitting knife handle.

I love Nessies and yours is great. I recently bought an old butcher with the intent of doing something similar to what you did. Thanks for showing me the possibilities.

I'm not 100% on this but I believe that Bob Loveless used an old Marbles hatchet handle to design his world famous hunter handle. They sure feel right in the hand and you can get a few knife handles from most used handles. ;-)

Hi Howard, glad you like it. I LOVE great old butcher knives for recycling. This one is a Coombes knife, they made some very famous Bowies in the bowie period. This one is for sure pre 1892. Have fun making yours into a working knife.

Best regards

Robin

I have about six inches of tomahawk handle that I removed while modifying a CS Spike Hawk. What do you think about using it Robin?

Hey Bro
This is a piece of a cold steel haft attached to an old something ;-). It was a good feeling handle for chopping. I think a curved hatchet handle feels better on a nessie. I personally like a slightly dropped handle on a nessie.

Great Job Brother Robin. I love remodeling old "Junk" knives and they can still be found at flea markets and yard sales,
I have a bucket full from an antiques fair. You nailed this one with the "Nessie" profile. It should be good at skinning those horses w/horns ya'll call Moose.
Is this the same as made by the "Coombes Livery Co" of London? They date back to mid 1600's and were strong in trade knives.

Broken hatchets make fantastic handles. I don't know why we have to have skinny little handles on knives. Why is the ground in your pics ALWAYS white? Here's one of mine with a hatchet handle. The butt was splintered up so I poured pewter on it.

You da man Robin, I hope your ground turns green....

thanks for the inspiration pipe:thumbup:
it brings me great joy taking tools/things that most people would consider garbage and turn it into something people can use and enjoy for years to come:D
