I have a Fiskars 14" hatchet and an Ontario 12" machete that I usually take along with me on hikes and camping trips and stuff, but I have been wondering how well a khukuri would replace these two tools. I have been looking at the HI Khuks for a while and I'm thinking about buying one some time this year.

When Im hiking/camping I usually do a good amount of chopping on fallen trees and large branches I find on the ground for fire wood. I use the hatchet for that. The machete is mostly used when clearing out little sections of brush on the side of a river to make fishing easier. The machete actually is not really needed. I could easily get by with just a 4" blade, but it speeds things up I guess.
Other than that my hatchet and machete dont get much use, not including when I practice building shelters or am messing around.

Would you recommend getting a Khukri and leaving the others at home?

I love my khuks but I wouldn't want to pack the 18.5"/ 28oz WWII on my belt for any distance. A 15" AK, a 16.5" WWII or an 18" siru or chit might be a better choice. Also the bolos from Reflections of Asia are solid workers, at 24oz my curved tip Ilocos bolo is pretty stout while the Batangas bolo is lighter/ quicker, more in line with machete work. I think a khuk could do double duty. If I wanted to carry only one heavy tool it would be a khuk.

I use to go on packing trips with my 18 inch AK, and after a while it got very heavy. The 15 inch AK is just about perfect as is the 16.5 inch WWII.
