What are some good, but reasonably priced hatchet recommendations? I've been using an old Plumb that I've had for years and years, but I suspect there's better out there.

You can get a good old keen kutter off of ebay, made of good steel, but that plumb is hard to beat. If wetterling's price hasn't gone up to much, you may want to check them out.

Depends on what 'reasonable' means I guess. The two most popular traditional hatchets are usually Wetterlings and Gransfors Brucks. You should also check out Snow & Neally. I just got a Wetterlings mini from Ben's Backwoods that I'm really enjoying, quite compact. Google both to get price ranges, but the Wetterlings are usually around $50, and the GB's generally go for around twice that. Here's a link or two:

I have a 16" Wetterlings that I really like. It is hand forged in Sweden, with an American hickory haft, for about $50. I don't think you could get anything better for that price. It holds an edge very well! I just ordered a Snow and Neely Hudson Bay and I'm looking forward to trying that one out.

check out your local flea mkt.'s. theres usually 2-3 old geezers ( like me ) selling hammers, axes, and hatchets. and handles for all of em. lots of knife guys there too. :D paul

Dam you guys! I have been kinda-sorta thinking about buying a camp axe/hatchet, and just dropped in here to follow the discussion. Now I'm gonna be out $50 on a Wetterlings. Sheesh!

Hum, I've always liked the leather handle Estwing. As a side note, I was given a Marbles for Christmas in the 90's, and it has never been used. I mention it becuase it's factory edge is sharper than all but a few of knives I've bought. Incredibly hair popping sharp.

that may have been one of the last U.S. made.

Haven't heard much about the chinese ones currently available.

My scout son has a Buck Axe and I have the little Gerber Backpax. both are made with quality and strength, however, i like the Buck's longer handle for more powerful strikes without worrying about your knuckles and hand.

Plus, i think that the Buck is just a little less $$$$ -------- Eric

Yes, that Marbles hatchet is definatly one of the ones made in Gladstone Michigan. It was even purchased there.

Curiously, even A.G. Russell doesn't have much good to say about the Chinese Marbles, and he sells the stuff.

From all that I have saw, I would say a Fiskars or a Wetterlings are definitely a good bet.

Oddly enough you are twice wrong. I do not sell the Chinese Marble's knives or Axes. While I have not seen the Axes I have lots of good things to say about their Chinese pocket knives. ancd may sell them soon .
