Hatchet vs. Large Wilderness blade??!

Totally disagree there.

I used to labor under a heavy pack using that logic.

All I could think about was not the hike but how fast I could get to camp and set up and get that weight off.

DISCLAIMER: I am a backpacker. Not a hike in 3 or 4 miles and camper, so for those that pack in only a few miles weight is not so big a consideration.

Really Hd...... You have to consider how old the person is, and what their "limit" is.

I'm not saying I'm BETTER than anyone else when it comes to U.L. backpacking. I will say that most of my friends call me the " mountain goat". I climb well. They are all up to the task...... I'm just "built" a little better than them for climbing.

What is "heavy" really. Id depends on WHO is caring the load right. Not you..... or me. It's them. Thats all......

I'm not sure if I explained it properly, HD. I think we are on the same team, here. My whole angle is that you should be carrying a pack that is WELL below your weight limit. This way, if you gather along the way or decide to splurge and bring an axe you can still manage. Isn't that what you are essentially saying, too?

Holy crap there are alot of strong opinions on here. Starting this thread may have been asking for trouble.

That said, i say carry whatever make you comfortable. If its an axe, saw, knife, multi tool, folding knife, and kitchen sink, so be it. Who cares!!!

I personally carry a whole bunch of steel- Bahco Laplander, GB Hunters axe, Mora 2000 (back up blade), Mora Classic 1 around my neck, and Leatherman Core on my hip. It may seem a little light to some and way to much for others but its what i prefer and i can perform every task i need to and hike 25-30 miles in a weekend without and issue.
