Hatchet.

That’s what I was thinking too. If you look at the sheath, it was meant to carry on your belt. So it’s small size makes sense. It might do a good job making kindling, but not actually splitting logs. Funny they called it an “axe”, when it’s clearly a hatchet.

From a time before the internet before people thought to chop and baton with their hunting knives. (I’m being sarcastic). I still don’t chop or baton with my knives and can see the value of the “sportsman’s axe”, for the light stuff, that is just a little too big for a knife.
