Hatchets on longer handles

In an attempt to reuse some old handles laying around collecting dust, i reshaped them and hung two hatchet heads on them. I think they came out pretty good. I'm not much into hatchets but I like the the look of them.

The longer hatchet (wetterlings) is on a 23" handle reclaimed from an old cruiser double bit handle.

The shorter hatchet (German - stamped with a crown) is a on a smaller single bit boys axe handle and is about 20".

Thanks for looking.

Those are great. I love that German hatchet on the boy's axe handle. I bet it would give a Gransfors Bruks SFA a run for it's money.

I've been wanting to do something like this with some old handles I have around but I haven't done it yet. Thanks for the inspiration.

Those two look great. I especially like the looks of handle on the German head. I know someone has already asked but what camera and lens and or filter are you using on your outdoor shots?

Great looking rehandle job! Yep, I asked about your photo set-up, still love the effect you get. Looks very much like over saturated slide film.

I use iphone filters (instagram and snapseed) but these are taken with an old Kodak 4.1 mpx point n shoot camera.

Thanks all.

Pegs, the handle on that German one has a bit of a bow to it but I still like it.

Can I ask what type of finish you're using on these, Coop? Is it just BLO or are you doing something else as well?

I'm diggin it too Coop. I really like the idea of it too. I have not ever tried to use a 20"~ handled axe before but I would like too. When I go camping I usually take my Fiskars 28" but it always seems like overkill. I purchased a 14" Fiskars hatchet to take instead, but in turn, it never feels like enough. I would like to give a 19-22" a go.

I'm not afraid of admitting I am coveting that German one......

Just remember that it's a dangerous length. Missed or glancing blows with short axes go into your legs and knees rather than into the ground like with full sized axes. A 19" axe can be handy when used one-handed like a hatchet but becomes more dangerous with two-handed use. You can place your body to the side of a one-handed blow. A two-handed blow is by default headed between your legs. With short axes you have to remember to follow Rule #1 - don't let the axe handle cross a line parallel to the ground.

I like this thread. So far I hung my 1.75lb Warren on a 28" boy's axe handle, and plan to do the same with my Husqy/Hults head.

Pegs...
I have an old TT Flint Edge DB cruiser with what I believe to be the original handle. It needed rehanging. After a long soak in my BLO soaker, it came out VERY dark. I found it interesting and odd that it came out so dark!

Coop...
Those turned out to be real beauties :)

Those are pretty man, I recently hung a plumb hatchet head on a 21" handle, It turned out great, I find that the size is very useful, it stays in my truck for whenever I need it.

I have a small hatchet head, only stamped CANADA and about 1.25 pounds on a 20" or so handle, the extra length makes it a really powerful chopper for the weight.
Good way to recycle an old handle too.

Did these two last year and was inspired to fit another one tonight.

Operator sent me this little True Temper Flint edge hatchet as part of a CT / Keen Kutter trade. Had a part of an old axe handle in good shape laying around and got to work. Fit the head on and cut a kerf. Wedged it. lots of shaping and trimming of the handle.

handle's got a small curve to it but no matter to me.

thanks for looking.

My original pics were in webshots which s the bed. I tried to repost them in a previous post (above).

Did another one tonight. Another hatchet from Operator (I promise I'll start in on the Flint Edge CT soon brother). Used an old salvaged maine double bit handle. came out well I think. Not sure what I'll do with it. Maybe gift it to a friend.
