Just what is a Bowie?

There is considerable variation between a Natchez "Bowie" and an "Iron Mistress."

Would a K-Bar qualify as a "Bowie?"

 
Oh yeah. The Ka-Bar and the Buck Special, two of America's most popular large fixed blades are Bowies. At least I would consider them Bowies. There have been so many styles of Bowies, definitions are not easy or agreed upon. To me, they are either a clip point straight knife or in some cases a different style that was historically called a bowie. The sharpened swedge is a classic feature, though many modern versions have a false edge.
