Hate for benchmade or spyderco

I was thinking about this the other day. Some people hate gerber, coldsteel, even strider and cr (sebenza), but I've never heard of anyone actually hating bm or spyderco.
I know some strongly perfer one over the other, but does anyone really hate either of these two companies?

Hate I dont see but cross brand bashing esp betwix the 2 happened lotsa time here ....... Me, i love em both.

The only thing I hate about Benchmade is that, after finally introducing models that used the Axis-lock with reversible clips for tip-up OR tip-down carry, Benchmade then promptly discontinued all of those models. So now, if you want a brand new Axis lock model, you're stuck with tip-up carry! :grumpy:

Not happy! Considering the fact that I prefer tip-down, and Benchmade used to be THE company to go to if you wanted an extremely well-made, tip-down carried folder! You can still find such a folder from Benchmade, but I remember when every folder from Benchmade was tip-down. What the Hell Benchmade, what the Hell?!

Spyderco on the other hand has decided to give their customers more choices, with regards to how their most popular knives are carried. The Endura 4 and Delica 4 both allow tip-up or tip-down carry. Definitely nice!

I like spyderco myself and don't care that much for benchmade but I don't hate bm. Seems to me it's kind of a ford/chevy kind of thing if you're into cars and a colt/springfield arms kind of thing if you're into 45's. later, ahgar

Ya, I hate them! They have total control over me! Their products speak to me and they always say the same thing, "buy me". So I do. I can't go anywhere without them. Every knife magazine I open, they are there. They have some magnetic power over my cash. I could go on and on, but I think I will go knife shopping.

I love them both.

I love the Spydie hole and most of their models but I love the Axis lock and many of BM's models too.

My favorite would be a Para-Military with an Axis lock. Man would that be one bad knife. :)

I love em both too, I love the Grippys especially now there in 154, and the 940's. I edc a military and I love it, I have a small collection of the endura model's. I like things about both companies.

"hate" is too strong a term for me to use regarding Benchmade, it's no secret that i *love* Spyderco knives, but the worst i could say about Benchmade is that i'm.... apathetic about Benchmade, yes, they're a well made, solidly constructed knife, no arguments there, i just have yet to find a model that appeals to me, the Grip/Minigrip line just doesn't fit my hand right, the Switchback series is more than i'm willing to spend, although i *do* like them, just not willing to break the $100 barrier.......yet

Spyderco, OTOH, has knives in my price range that just *fit* and feel great

I really *want* to like Benchmade, but none of the models in my price range appeal to me

that's why i'm keeping an eye on the used knife display at KTP, if they get a decent used Axis-lock equipped BM in good condition and the price was right, i'd purchase it.....

2 of my favorite knife companies. Prefer Spyderco folders over Benchmade, and Benchmade FB's over Spyderco, but they are all quality knives.

Also helps that the companies stand behind their knives and do what they can to satisfy the consumer.

Hate?
hmmm... a little strong perhaps.
I hate terrorists, child molesters, hostage-takers, top Enron and Worldcom executives. But knifemakers? nope.

Hate is a strong word really. Dislike is more accurate in most all cases.

I agree with everyone else. Hate is a strong word and I do not like to use it much. I do for the most part dislike the Spyderco knives. I am sure that they are decent knives, but I really think that BM's are much better knives. Then again I think Benchmades are better than just about everything else out there. But then again, you know what they say about opinions :D

Oh, and I really love the axis lock. I have 5 axis lock knives now and I cannot wait to get more. I just wish the bank account agreed.

I think that the reason you don't see people bashing Spyderco much is that Spyderco is a good corporate citizens who provide a quality product at reasonable prices. Also Sal Glesser participates in this forum, even though Spyderco has its own forum. Mr. Glesser takes the time to talk and listen to ELU's.Spyderco also addresses warranty issues with class and professionality. All companies should conduct themselves in this manner.

I hate what they have done to my credit cards!!!! I especially hate how they keep coming up with great knives that I am compelled to Buy!!!

Spyderco is my personal favorite. They're just honest, hard working knives without any stupid marketing flash. I'll admit I find some of them pretty ugly though while Benchmades are very nice looking. The Axis lock is also quite innovative.

My thought exactly, Sal Glesser is a credit to the industry. Spyderco has done more to advance the use and acceptance of pocket knives than any other group since the Boy Scouts. God Bless Him.

They both make high-quality knives at reasonable prices; what's to hate? :D

You will find Benchmade fans who'll tell you that Spydercos are ugly, that they all look alike (never understood that one, myself), that their full-flat-grinds are too fragile for everyday tasks like prying open vault doors and stabbing fuel drums, and that the unlined FRN handles will shatter if you look at 'em wrong.

You'll also find Spyderco fans who'll tell you that Benchmade builds their blades too thickly, puts valuable production dollars into cosmetics rather than function, shows little respect for other companies' intellectual property, and hypes up non-features (like their assertion that they switched to oval holes because that shape works better  ).

I'd definitely share some of the opinions in that last paragraph. :D

Still, Spyderco partisans and Benchmade partisans _generally_ still recognize that the other company offers well-made knives at an essentially fair price. I mean, I'll be happy to tell you why Spyderco's _better_ than Benchmade, but I'll never tell you Benchmade makes bad knives. ;)

I like them both, although I have been on a Benchmade kick recently.
Spyderco makes great products, and I like the way their company runs; they take the user's input and concerns all the way to the finished product. Sal is a great resource if you have any questions, as are all the other members of his team. Very customer-oriented.
Benchmade, as a company, is a little more self-hyped in my opinion, and a little less concerned with the ELU's input. Example: they stopped maintaining a discussion forum here.
That said, I have 2 Benchmades with me now (and a SAK :D ), and the Spydercos are at home.

Some people hate Gerber because they used to be good, but after being bought out by Fiskars they are pretty bad. It's easy to hate sell-outs that have gone downhill.

Some people hate Cold Steel because they are a joke. They make stupid claims and have ugly designs. They are like a higher-end United Cutlery- They steal ideas, make mall ninja claims, and promote (not actually build) knives that look like stuff you buy in L.A. at a swap meet. It's easy to hate wannabes.

Some people hate Strider because Mick Strider is mean.

No one hates Chris Reeve.

No one hates Spyderco or Benchmade.

Chris Reeve, Sal Glesser, and Les de Asis are class acts.

Disclaimer:

Take my post as a bit of a joke. I respect Gerber's past and while their current stuff is low-end, that is all some people need. I think Cold Steel knives look ugly and I think their marketing is just disgusting, but the knives are well built- so I do give respect to the company the builds the actual knives, but not the Cold Steel marketing, or the "designers". I have seen Mick Strider act like a jerk, and also like a great guy. The Internet can make people look worse than they are. I am going to buy an SMF this Saturday, and I live in Oceanside (where Mick Strider lives) and really want to meet him and hang out at the Strider shop in San Marcos (very near me).
