Hatjacking

The bowler crown looks OK to me. I'm having trouble believing Black is cooler than brown or sand. Imagine running into someone in the desert who has one of those old style stove pipes on? Captain Trips, eh?

Your very welcome Josh. I haven't found anybody or any company who can beat Tim's hats for price and quality. He makes them to be used day-in and day-out like they used to do when a man didn't go about his business bare-headed.

I think sand might be a little cooler. A long time ago I used to avoid black hats for some reason or other but was later convinced they suited me better. I wear them pretty much exclusively now, and from experience in a desert summer feel they wear cooler than dark brown or khaki for what that's worth.

I know a couple of cowboys (the real thing) who will wear nothing else year round, like the old timers.

I don't go out in the chapparal without water,a hat and a khukuri.

You guys in AZ have it fat and rich with a two rainfall season desert- the Sonoran.

Just kidding of course- I love the Sonoran and the part of AZ no one else wants to look at.

Do you really think a black felt fur is going to be cooler than a sand brown?

I guess it really depends on the head. For me black is just fine. There may be some who might think I'm already "cooked" though.

I never saw Hopalong crack much of a sweat!

I know what you mean about the brutal reflection from the ground and sky, but a dark brim can only cut so much. I have shades now.
My only fear of shades are those particular light conditions where they would help hide a rattler rather than disntinguish it.

How can I know which hat style would be best for me, anyway? I have a hundred dollar crap shoot to undergo.

Higher open crowns give more insulating space and promote more rapid heat loss. Low crowns are more convenient for getting in and out of a vehicle.

Sugar-Loaf (the original Stetson shape), bowler, and flat-top crowns are older styles that don't have a pinch or crease. They are becoming more popular if that means anything. They were very common in the Southwest.

You might consider a straight telescope also. That one is also straight on the sides but has been creased down from a round open body in an even round shape on top that looks flat from the side but is domed in the center. They are common these days.

It really depends on you physical characteristics, where you intend to wear it, and your taste.

The Australian styles are very similiar to the American western styles seen often in film and on tv from back in the 1940's thru 1970's.

Best thing is to talk to your hatter.

In the old days, felt hats used to be made using mercury, leading workers in the industry to eventually suffer heavy metal poisoning.

As a result, the term "Mad as a hatter" meant the person reffered to was well and truly flat-out crazier than H---!!!

The mildly eccentrics on this forum merely add a little seasoning to the mixture.

The Dome-Top Arabia is much like the discontinued Bailey Tuscarora ( named after a Nevada Ghost Town up near Elko ). It's Amish crown is just a bit lower crown, a bit less angular curve where the side and top meet, and a bit flatter top. The Dome-Top Arabia's brim is exactly the shape of the Tuscarora, only the D-T is a 3&1/4 brim where the Tusc. is 3" even.

I just switched to a straw for the summer months - just feels to me like it lets sweat evaporate easier, are lighter, and the felts can salt stain if you really get into hot weather. Besides, for $12 dollars, if it gets broke or lost I won't cry over it.

Or if you'e out of hot sauce, just wring the sweat out of one of those fur felt hats on a hot summer day.

Rusty- you did get my return email, didn't you?

Yvsa mentioned a black hat no longer fitting him. Thought I'd mention it so if he still had it, he could try a Hatjack. Worth a shot - they advise not to stretch more than two sizes, i.e. 7 to 7&1/4 max.
When I first started reading this thread I didn't give a thought to my black hat that doesn't fit. Thanks for the thought Bro!!!! I tried dampening it and wearing it to see if it would fit and guess it wasn't such a good hat after all as it seems thinner in some places than others now as well as a little deformed.:( I'm planning on getting one of Tim's hats one of these days, maybe.;)

Sorry to hear about that hat Bro. I knew you were having problems with it. What do you think of the syles we've been talking about?
