I'm looking for something breathable to wear when hiking, and something that will offer enough sun protection/shade for my face and neck. Also, I received one of the closest haircuts I have ever gotten, just short of having a shaved head, and I want to protect my noggin. I have used ballcaps for years, but they trap the heat. I picked up a $5 fisherman's hat last year, and use that for work outside at home. However, I'd like something better. I picked up a Filson hat last weekend, and while it should be great for the fall or winter, it is too heavy for the summer. Not looking for a straw hat :D. Trying to keep it under $50. I am going to check out REI on the way home from work tomorrow, as well as Dick's sporting goods and Bass Pro Shops when I can.

How about looking into running hats.
they are ball caps made from that new fangled
drywick stuff.
I have a few of them from various races.
The do seem to help, but Im not a hat person any more.

I will give you one big tip
no matter what hat style you get,
Get a light colored hat
Dark colors will bake your head,I dont care
what fabric they use.
Some have a darker color on the underside of the bill,
this is really good as it reduces the glare.

here are a few examples at REI

your local running store may have a wide selection as well.

I got a Tilley T3 Airflo this year. Around here they sell for $60 to $80.

I checked ebay and found one, new/unworn minus tags, for ~$30 in my size. Take a look around. Sometimes you get lucky.

Kakadu-awesome rough wear working man's western style hats-give it a coat of mink oil or natural shoe polish every year and it will get the most miles for your money, I don't leave my place rain or shine without it anymore. I slept on it camping last weekend and it popped right back into shape. I'm pretty sure mine is the Stockman model but they have a few hundred different designs.

Straight away - all hats will trap heat. It's the nature of the beast - a covering. However, the nifty new synthetics w/CoolMax headbands offer alot of protection.

After meeting necessary criteria, in many ways a hat is very much a personal opinion (ie - if i look like a total dork in the hat, it will never again grace my gnarled melon). That aside, i've always preferred a hat with some structure which excludes the boonie hats (which were great when i was on active duty and while in the field, but only as a nice change from our brimless berets).

I'd be looking at this one (and actually put the gun-metal one on my b-day gift list!!!)

Otherwise, this one looks pretty nice with nice venting up top:

Enjoy!!

Bah, just run a bead of water along the inside of the hat, it's really not a huge issue unless you're running around in 90 degree weather with a wool beanie on your head.

I wear an Outback Trading Company "Willis Oilskin". It's waterproof, crushable/packable/floatable, lightweight, breathes nice, and it'll keep the sun off your face and back of neck. I just wore mine out for the first time in significant heat on Monday and was never uncomfortable. Just my 2 cents...

I always thought a "Tarp-Hat" was cool and would like to try one (brought to my attention here)

I also like Outdoor Research hats, we got a Seattle Sombrero and luv it. Maybe not as good as a Tilley but close!

Here in OZ there is a make of hats popular in the country , broadbrimmed ,mesh sides , for ventilation , and crushable -- make might be Barmah hats ? Ill check when I see one over the next couple of days.
