Hats

I went on a quest for the perfect backpacking hat, one that would keep me shaded in the sun, warm in the winter and not too hot on those steep uphill climbs. I finally found the perfect one for me. It's Austrailian and it's called a "Snowy River". It was made for the Disney movie, "The Man from Snowy River".

I've worn it up over the Kearsarge Pass, numerour day hikes in summer and it's great just wearing while I'm mowing the yard.

Here's where I got mine, fast shipping, professional service

Hope this helps

I have two Tilley's, an Airflo and a regular canvas one. I have found that, at least for me, the canvas one is cooler in AZ than the nylon Airflo.

+ some more on the Tilley idea. They run a little bit more than you are wanting to spend, but they are worth it.

There are stories on their website about people out and about with their Tilley hat and I thought it was all crap, until the other day when a guy asked me, "Hey, is that a Tilley?" The hats really are world famous.

Thanks everyone, I am overwhelmed with choices. I am going to get an el cheapo from REI, and make a decision on a high quality hat, keep the ideas comin'.

Another one with Columbia :)
I own this quite heavy canvas hat for a few years now. Great against the sun and rain(impregnated). Favourite for canoing and hiking into the mountains. I think that hats like that are actualy very high on the list of things you need outdoors.

Another for the Crusher at Duluth. Been very pleased with the protection and comfort

Well, I thought long and hard about getting a Tilley hat, but in the end, I could not justify the price. I ended up getting the REI clone, http://www.rei.com/product/766021. Worked outside yesterday in the heat and humidity, and while the brim got sweat stained, the hat did a good job shading my face from the sun, and the vents worked pretty well, kept the top of my head cooler than if I was wearing one of my ballcaps. Took a look at the hat today, sweat stains are gone. I might get another one for my car.
