Have a look

The first one of the Tigershark is probably a transition model before they went to the serrations but after they started the coated stainless blade nad it still has the old Leather Sheath. Kinda cool but not SK-5 Carbon.

The second one is an original Vietnam era SOG knife having nothing at all to do with the SOG knife company. Cool but likely to be very costly for what are not actually very great performing knives. Great collectibles though.

Nothing at all to do with the SOG knife company? I didn't know that. I wonder who did manufacture it?

These were given to MACV-SOG Studies and Oservations Group soldiers nad other members of Special Forces during the Vietnam War; well before the SOG knife company ever existed. They are what the S1 SOG bowie is patterned after.

The manufacturer of most of the variants is unknown and/or classified. I have heard that they were primarily made in Japan.

A good condition one with provenence can bring well over $2000.

That variant on the auction was actually the 2nd style that Ben Baker created for the SOG/5th Group. The version that SOG recreates is the 3rd model Ben Baker designed more specifically for the 5th Special Forces Mess Association to give out as awards for tours of duty etc.

I wish that SOG Specialty would have also redone this model with brass fixtures as seen in the pict. The originals were on the rough side, quality wise, and were seemingly not as popular as they are today. Popular today to the collector for sentimental reasons, providence etc.

I still like them; worts and all :)

It should be of note that there are many, many fake "original" SOG knives out there. They seem as prevalent as fake Rolex watches. Anyone who buys one should be very knowledgeable about these knives and be able to tell the difference between a real and fake one.

I think SOG has pulled down the link I'd put on their site of an insightful article by Ben Baker about the origin of the original SOG Recon knife from which SOG Specialty Knives patterned their SOG Bowie. Spencer actually when back to the original factories which made the CISO/SOG knives to do research before patterning his own. For those who have not read it, I'll make it available here. Enjoy! If you look closely at pictures in that article, you'll see the origins for three of SOG Specialty Knives' models: the SOG Bowie, the Recon Bowie, and the SCUBA/DEMO.

Here is a custom made SOG CISO Recon from Allen Blade in a similar style to the SOG knife companies Recon Bowie.

Hi There, Vince.

Nice custom! Is that one in your collection or did you find that one online?

This stuff is great! Lots of history and information!

Thanks again,

Matthew

I bought it when it first came out. They are very hard to find now.

I just logged on and I noticed about this post about the SOG PE AUS-6 tigershark from ebay. I am the one who bid on it and won the bid:D . On the blade, it shows a SEKI, JAPAN. On the other side it shows the SOG mark. It's PE and has a coating over the blade. The knife is in excellent shape with no wear. The leather shealth is in good shape. I'm still looking (researching) on this knife.

Thanks NPH, yeah it was interesting when I first found out about this tigershark. So I bought it:p.

I have started to collect knives in Dec. of 2005, so far;

1) SOG SK-5 Tigershark
2) SOG SK-5 Sogtech
3) SOG AUS-6 PE Tigershark
4) Cold Steel Trailmaster
5) United Cutlery Special Forces knife (this knife I bought back in 1987, I like it before I ever knew about the SOG. Not much history on this one. It's patterned after the Tigershark. It's in good shape with a leather shealth.)

I just signed on to Bladeforums in Dec. of 2005. It's been a great source of information especially about knives like the SOG AUS-6 PE Tigershark.

Thanks again

Hey BubbaGanew,

PE is "plain edge" with no serrated edge. Most AUS-6 Tigersharks have serrated edges to the back of the blade. This one has no serrated edges

Sorry I should have explained this better, hope this clear things up.
