Im looking for some A2 Tool Steel on Amazon from a company called Starrett. In the title it states that it is Air Hardened, This is my first knife so I'm going to be doing it all by hand (Rasps, Files, Sandpaper, etc). I don't know if this means that it's been air hardened in advanced, which would severely increase the amount of work I have to do on the blade before heat treatment, So I'm going to link it so you guys can tell me if this is suited for making knives out of.

Thanks in advance.
If I can't use this I'll just use D2 or 01.

Starett is a large and respected purveyor of tool steel and other such things. A2 is an air HARDENING steel. The ad says that it is "anneal tempered" which means either annealed or spheroid annealed after hardening and as such, ready for you to file..

Joe is correct. A2 is a good alloy and Starret is a trusted supplier

A2 is one of my favorite steels. You will definitely have to send it out for heat treatment.

Welcome to Shop Talk

Thanks for filling out your profile

I agree with the above the stock you have chosen will file easily and has the advantage of being nice and flat.
That specific link is for 2 1/2 inches wide so you may prefer half the width, dang near any size is available.

You didn't ask for this, but since it's your first post, you can find links to the heat treaters when you are ready.

Thank you very much, gentlemen, You see, I'm still a newb to all this, and even though I've been playing with knives since I was a wee lad, I'm just starting to get into the more technical things. Thanks again.
