My goal is to sandwich some stainless over the D2 to make a nice San Mai for an short sword project. Thank's Gent's.:)

Very high carbon AND chromium content = pretty tough to forge weld. When I actually swung a hammer I didn't have luck with such things, but there are folks doing it now a days. It's all about oxygen exclusion, the oxides that form wreak havoc on welding. Many smiths do can welds to accomplish this.
Here is a previous thread: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...uestion?highlight=stainless+damascus+tutorial
Also, I believe that big blue forging hammers put out a pretty good video on making stainless damascus that might be worth researching.

Thanks very much gent's and especially for the link Stevo. It looks like a real challenge to do this at all, maybe I will have to take those blades and make a bunch more neck knives out of them, they are good for that.

how big are they? D2 planer blades make good knives, and if you grind them hard they require no additional heat treat.
