Have gas prices changed your summer plans?

We get about 10 miles a gallon towing our travel trailer. We had a trip planned to drive up the center of Michigan, cross over the bridge and drive the northern shore of the U.P. to finally end up in the Porcupine Mountains for a extended camping and hiking stay. We now have plans to stay closer to home. Maybe a trip down to the Hocking Hills (Ohio) and some trips to camp along the lake Erie. A trip to the Smokies (without the trailer) to do a little hiking is also being considered. My wife loves waterfalls so we get out the guidebook and hike to the ones we have not visited before. So what are your plans this summer?

Wilderness gathering next month, Nowhere else, gas prices are puttin a hold on that. Im lucky that there are alt of places close by to get out in.

I already went to Arkansas in may with the wifey to do some hiking and R&R at one of our favorite spots....

Lol, I was planning to put a 5.0 in my ranger, but now I'm changing the plan to a turbodiesel...does that count ?:D

Does shorten the range of the motorhome though - fortunately so many great spots are close by. We're staying put this summer and, unsurprisingly, gas prices are part of that decision. We're in sort of a touristy area, so we're already in the place that people travel to to spend their holidays...

Some amazing stuff up there. Me and my dad make it almost and annual trip. Hit Petit Jean then up to Eureka Springs.

Eureka springs an awesome little town. We go to the buffalo river and rent a cabin.....

Heading to the UP tomorrow - My parents live outside Marquette - Gas is about $.40 more per gallon there then in OH. Last winter, I spent over $20 to fill my sled! I think I will take the RM250 for a spin. By the time I buy 5 gallons of Premium and motorex, I am looking at about $30 an hour (without ORV)! I am taking my wife's Matrix instead of my truck - At least that gets 30+ mpg so it will only cost $350 for the trip! Have fun in the the Hocking hills. Check out Ravenwood Castle - your wife will love it. MD

BIg changes. We're getting out less, for sure. Couple years ago, driving to San Diego to see the in laws was pricey, but not too bad. Now it's over $300 to do the trip with the necessary detours (other family members) and mandatory oil change and air filter change from the trip.

Hate to be a bummer, but I think the motorhome is going to go the way of the drive-in movies. Heck - I got lucky the first time at a drive in - and you won't believe this but the name was 'The 69 drive-in' as it was located on highway 69! Those were the good old days, when they would announce to please stay in your cars because there was a black bear in the park.

Nothing like sitting on top of the Crescent, smoking a cigar, drinking a beer watching the fog flow over the christmas lights. So relaxing there. But coming from a much bigger city, I am not use to EVERYTHING closing at 8-9pm.

I just looked at pictures of the Buffalo River, looks beautiful.

More sidework to pay for park fees and fuel. Closer to home camp trips. It just takes more planning, so I've started a savings just for next years outings and camp trips.

A Drive in opened in my city just a few months ago.

We also have a Adult Drive in that has been open since my dad moved here in the late 70s.

Had planned to take an actual vacation (my first since '98 or so); instead I picked up another FT job so I can be sure I can afford fuel to get to classes this fall and spring.

But I will get to go deer hunting this year, so not all is lost.

i never get too far anyways, but it will make it harder to find a way up to marty simon's gathering at the end of august than it would have been before... maybe i will be able to carpool with someone else in the state...

i actually plan on trying to find some trails in the area (within about 10-15 miles) that i can bike to so that i have somewhere to really hike. i have never really tried to find trails in the area, just settling for once or twice annual hikes when friends get together and plan them.

so, for me the gas prices aren't really doing too much. i don't pay for gas or insurance on my bicycle...its a pretty good deal.

i do know that they are affecting everyone around me though...its a real shame. we'll pull out of it though, we always do

I was going to get a new vehicle - necessary for work. Did the test drive, the haggliing, etc. then the gas hit $1.20 a litre (roughly $5/gallon) so no sale. Another guy at work - same story. Gas is now $1.35/litre.

See thread - "You don't have to be pitdog......" :)

Since our summer plans are to go to Thailand, no it hasn't changed anything. :p I'm sure we're already paying their stupid fuel surcharges in the tickets!

You aren't too far from the Metacomet Trail, which is a good thing. There is also a couple of state forests that aren't too far from you either.

I'd say that my plans have been stinted a little by gas prices, but probably not to greatly. I will say that for around town, the mountain bike has become a very nce assett.

mp, thanks. i pulled the CT walk book out of the library, as well as kephart's revised book. kephart is really witty and funny, and is light humored. doesn't take himself so seriously as nessmuck.

anyways, i haven't got around to checking the walk book but look forward to it tomorow or the next day for some trails nearby.

i have also heard rumors about trails in the town "landtrust" so that might be a possibility.

I must say the price of gas did effect my hiking and travel ... many of the spots i like are about 35-45 miles away... My bike does get about 52+mpg but the problem is where to store my riding gear so many times i cant use it unless i meet someone who i know would let me keep my gear in there car.... price of gas stinks...
