Nah, I’m not stoned or dying or getting mushy, I’m still the same Old Cranky Bastid I’ve always been, but you know every once in a while I’m reminded how great this Forum is. I just read this thread about an A.G. Russell knife problem, and up pops A.G. to answer it.
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=173340&goto=newpost

It’s not just A.G. of course, it’s all the great makers, manufacturers, dealers and experts that make this place GREAT! More than that it’s all the great people that make up this Forum. Sure I complain that the threads are sometimes boring, but we take for granted all the fabulous information and connections that are here for the taking.

In 1998 I didn’t know that custom knives existed. Now mostly because of BFC, not only has my education on knives increased by volumes, but when I go to a show it’s better than going to a family reunion. I’ve got the NYCKS coming up in a couple of weeks and because of a fall off in my business I won’t have any money to spend, but I still wouldn’t miss it for the world. Blade Show in Atlanta was the best weekend I can remember in a long time, and I already have a room booked for next year.

I know it’s not Thanksgiving, but I just wanted to say thanks to all of you, Spark in particular for keeping a roof over our heads and MikeT for building this place. Sure there are other knife forums, but they’re just that other knife forums. This is the Place. The #1 Knife site on the Web...BladeForums.Com ROCKS!

I feel better now.

"snif" "sniff"...I love you too Phil!

I second what Phil said. Sometimes ya just stop and sit back to see what you have. This place has brought me more knowledge, laughter, fun and friendship than anything I can possibly think of. Keep kickin ass Spark! BLADEFORUMS ROCKS!!!!!

Thanks all, I have said all along it is the people not the knives that in time become the important aspect of this passion for knives that we share.

Temporarily musheaded Bastid.

Hey fellas-A couple years back I was undecided on a particular model of a recent production knife that was made with input from a well known custom maker.I posted this, asking for opinions. Well in addition to the various response the company owner and the custom maker both emailed me with their opinions. Where else could you find something like that but the forums.

Okay James, just for that I'm going to embarrass you and show you what kind of place this is and what kind of a guy you are.

I had a thread on Bernard Levine's forum on an antique stag handle Jospeh Rodgers (circa 1930's) steel I found. A short time after that James said he found a carving set on E-bay that looked just like the steel I bought, he ended up buying it. Not too long after that James asked me for my home address, so I gave it to him. When I asked why he wanted it he said, "Never mind." I received a package and when I opened it up there was this beautiful George Wostenholm & Sons three piece carving set in stag from Sheffield England. Wow! When I asked him why, he said "I thought you would like it." Like it? You blew my mind. This is going to carve the Thanksgiving turkey, and guess who I'm going to be thinking of?

Ya see this is what I mean? Knife people are the best people, and the best of the Knife people are right here on this forum. I've got a bunch of stories of folks that have been overly generous to me, (come to think of it James is one of three people on this thread that have given me knives, go figure?) but I want to hear from you.

Why do you love this place?

Knowledge!
Knowledge is power!
Bwahahahahaha!
Really, there is alot of great stuff to learn here.
Good folks to meet and talk with too.
Thanx to all that made/make it possible :)
sniff, sniff...love ya man sniff, sniff ;)

phil, you are so right.... I have friends all over the globe from here. I have laughed my rear end off, been puzzled, frustrated and teary eyed as we have lost members who have moved on (miss ya james) ... it is as a family :D sigh......

So here is me and the wife, kicking back at home. She comes out and sez...

"Hey Honey, we are going to have our second child!"

So I sez....

"Excellent! I gotta head into the chat room and tell the gang!"

Call the parents? Nope. Tell the brothers. Nuh-uh. Gotta dash in and tell the knife knuts the good news, then we'll call the rest of the people who need to know. THAT'S how much I love you guys.

NEXT?

:D :D :D
Congratulations to you and yours Vel!

As you can tell by the amount of time that I spend on Bladeforums, I think very highly of this place. As PhilL stated, it is the people first that make this a great site. All the fantastic info is what got me started here, it is the people that keep me coming back.

Yup, I agree. Been collecting knives since the late 70's but it's never been like this. The knives are good but it's the people that make this place. Thanks for starting this thread Phil.

Dave
Go Yankees! One down, 3 to go, can you say 4peat???

Since I found bladeforums in May 2001, I have spent approximately $850 on knives. I just committed to spending another $400 over the last week, including today.

Bladeforums - friend or foe?

I like it anyway.

By the way, when is someone going to buy a knife for me?

It is definitely a wellspring of info online and some great guys both on and off the net! As good as you guys are online it is a real blessing getting to meet some of you in person!

It would be significantly less pleasure without BladeForums, so I also want to thank Mike, Spark and the members.
BladeForums is great!

I always hesitate to make a list like this as I invariably leave off someone that belongs. Be that as it may...

Here's a few things that I'm thankful for. All of these things resulted from my participation on the forums.

  • Getting to know Dexter Ewing, David Baker (davidb415), Mark and Denise Kukelkorn (MarkK), Chris and Denna Raymond (CPR), Mike McLaurin (NCblades), Terrill Hoffman, Alan and Mary Folts, Tommy Matthews (Otha), Mark Hazen, Gary Graley, and the other members of the NC Knife Knuts gang...
  • Spending countless hours in the shop and home of GenO and Cindy Denning. There aren't two finer people around. If I ever turn out to be a decent knifemaker, it will be because of GenO's constant prodding and patient instruction.
  • Having a maker the caliber of Darrel Ralph insist that I fly up to his Ohio home to spend four days helping to make my own double-action EDC folder. Arguing, ahem, discussing social issues with Darrel's wife, Sharon. ;) Beating the crap out of Darrel's son, Ian, after he bounced a beachball off of my head one time too many. Oops, did I say that out loud? :o Conspiring with Dexter to drive Bruno (Darrel's huge Doberman) bonkers with a few flashlights. :D
  • Getting to know Dexter and his family when they put me up for the Southeastern Custom Knife Show weekend. Super folks!
  • Picking up my very first custom knife in person from Kit Carson at the '98 Blade Show - a medium Model 4 with a Talonite drop point blade. After chatting and e-mailing for so long, finally meeting him was a real treat.
  • Barry and Phillip Jones. Two fine makers who would do anything they could for you.
  • Steve Freund (and his various alter egos - Calvin Cooledge, Tim Buck II, etc...), owner of Tomway display cases. He might just be the most genuine knife knut I know. He's surely the funniest! And B*b Harshall, Steve's friend. Great guy with an even better knife collection. Or is that the other way around???
  • Tommy McNabb, the NC Custom Knifemakers Guild, and all of the knifemakers' wives who make everything run so smoothly! Without a doubt, it's the best state guild in the country. From the quarterly meetings/hammer-ins to the annual SECKS show, a class organization all the way around.
  • Hearing Les Robertson's stories in person. Sure, he's got that gruff no-BS personality, but the stories he tells are priceless.
  • Getting to know some forumites through e-mails, and occasionally meeting them in person - Phil, Para, TimmyF, Hoss, Jeff, Herb, Billy Mac, dogman, Gene, Kodiak, Paul, Randy, Win, Elliott, Dave, et al...
  • Audra Draper. 'Nuff said. :D
  • The Blade Show. For being within driving distance from my home.
  • Bubba's BBQ. For putting up with the NC Knife Knuts bi-monthly knife shows. The food ain't too bad either.
  • Meeting James and Toni Mattis at the Blade Show. Two folks that God made for each other. We miss you James.

Great thoughts, PhilL. This place is the best. It means alot to those of us that hang out here on a regular basis. A great source of both knowledge and friendship.:)
