Have people reacted to your knife with shock or fear?

WTF are you talking about?
WTF I am saying is: stop playing f@#1%g Prince of Persia, or Rambo. Get real - if you are so concerned about some bad guys attaking you, get some pepper spray or electroshoker... A big knife makes you cooler and stronger only if you are a teenager, thenn as the years pass the effect is wearing off...

If carrying a knife for SD helps somebody with his problems - that is fine, nobogy should live in fear. But that is not the reason for feeling yourself superior... Not at all.

I havn't been following this thread closely, but here's my opinion. It's a shame that the public is so paranoid and whatnot, and I fear that one day all of these paranoid people are going to outlaw something that I really treasure. But, I think that it's a little foolish to carry some extremely tactical, all black, auto-assist type of knife, and NOT expect atleast some people to find you a little strange, or find it scary. People, if you don't want to scare the general public, and also show everyone that knives are decent tools, then stop carrying all of this tactical non sense. Unless you're in the service or whatever, it's useless. Carrying a knife for self defense is just a flat out bad idea. In my opinion, carry a pocket knife that's NOT offensive, and carry a concealed handgun.

While I agree with you, I think the larger issue is that some folks are frightened by a Case Peanut. It's just a wimpy world we live in, sadly.

Carrying that stuff isn't helping matters as you said.

All it takes is a few idiots to ruin it for the rest of us, that macho crap isn't good for our cause, while it might sell some knives it just isn't what the general public wants to see in real life.

We all know there are some that just have to find reasons to use their new toy for some reason, but they need to be aware of who is around them and the fact that those people most likely won't take to their new toy in a positive manner.

Those people that might not like the new toy have opinions and they out number the rest of us by a very large percentage.

People just need to start using their brains before they pull out that toy and use it when they are around people.

If one wouldn't pull out a gun in the situations then they should leave that knife in their pocket also because most people view them as the same thing in today's society.

Like it or not that's just how things are these days, it's not like it was 30 years ago and it will never get back to that point again, at least in our lifetimes.... If ever...

^^ I just noticed you're in Raleigh. Man I love that place. Anyway, I really think it would help the situation at least a little bit, if everyone cut the tactical crap. And also, I can't see why carrying a highly tactical knife is any more useful than a SAK, Opinel, or Stockman. Many people have fond memories of these knives and some people even complement them, even if they aren't knife people.

Okay Poez I got you now the whole sheep with claws thing was throwing me. :hypnotysed:

I just retired from running websites for my living. 2 of them sold every brand and strength of defense spray and stun gun available. From playing around with them, you can believe me that a man armed with a knife, bat, sap, stick, knife or claws could walk right through them and mess you up bad.

There's no way anything but a gun or a stick (in the hands of a trained user) can compete or stop a man with a blade. :(

Just an example; today I was clipped into my climbing harness, changing out ropes that hold boat slings/pulleys 30+ feet up in the air. My Kershaw bump finally dulled out and I had to switch to a boy scout pattern traditional knife. Problem is, I had one hand full of a pulley and two ropes, and one hand with one rope and limited mobility to open the folder, had to use my teeth. This sort of thing is not an uncommon situation for "the working man", had a similar problem earlier in the week when I was holding a networking switch stack half up with one hand and needed the other to cut a zip tie. So while some people might not need 1 hand opening "tactical" ( I hate that word too) knives, a considerable amount of the population not only want but need a one hand opening knife or a fixed blade for daily life.

My sister just went back to Raleigh today after visiting the family here, love it down there!

So start carrying a stick then...
If you feel that knife makes you stronger - why would I argue with you. That is your own perception. But just in my eyes these SD people with knives are not better in any way, they have not done anything, they are not stronger - most of them even do not have any basic fighting skills or experience. They just bought and carry around some "tacticool" knife - what even my grandma could do... So are they the wolfs all out of sudden? Or are they still the pray? They are whatever they are - knife is irrelevant to that. Just makes them a bit strange and childish - thats all.

I can see what you are saying. Some people NEED one handed opening, and that's totally understandable. But, I think that there are one-handed knives out there that are not terribly scary or offensive.

Poez my man, I'm not arguing with you. Please don't misunderstand my intent. I'm trying to understand the way you write and respond to you - to converse is all. :)

I carry a a gun with a permit but not always, just most of the time depending on where I know I'll be going. Our small city businesses are loaded with the "no firearms permitted" stickers on the doors about as fast as the "shall issue" law went into effect.

I always carry a clipped folder in my pocket, an XM-18 a Sebenza or a Military. Those are my only 3 EDC knives. I also keep a 24" rattan stick in the back seat of my wife's car and mine. I've trained in FMA for over 25 yrs. Rattan sicks are extremely light almost indestructable and lethal if you train with them for a "very" short time. They're that easy to learn and the training directly corresponds or mimics the use of a blade.

I like to layer my self defense options. If I had a road rage nut approach, I'd step out with a rattan stick in my weak hand and looking for a gun from the opponent. No gun in their hand means no gun in mine. Now we're de-escalating things and trying to talk to our opponent and calm them down. The goal is never to resort to any kind of violence.

Barring someone trained with a baton and confident with it's use, a gun is your only way to stop a determined attacker with a blade. They're not better, or tacticool or stronger as you say, they're just better armed. ;)

That sounds like two legitimate situations for the use of a one handed knife and shouldn't be a problem. The problem occurs when someone at the local mall decides to whip out his AO w/blacked out 5" serrated tanto to open his snickers bar and show everyone around him what big bad man he his.

+1 You hit the nail on the head GallantEdge.

I have the opportunity to work with kids just out of high school. A young man and woman were using a squirt bottle to rinse something and the tip was plugged at the end. As I handed my closed stockman to the young man the young woman recoiled and said she didn't touch weapons. The young man, a little flustered, was unable to open it and handed it back. I chose the sheepsfoot as the least threatening blade, opened it, and handed it to the young man handle first with the edge away from me. I explained to the young lady that it was a slipjoint called a stockman and that it was a tool used by ranchers, cowboys and others for the better part of a century. The young man fixed the tip of the squirt bottle, figured out how to close the knife and handed it back with a certain amount of satisfaction. I could not help but remember, at their age, I'd of grabbed it, used it, checked out the blades and sharpness before closing it and handing it back.

Also have to take into account how these people dress these days..... What they look like to others that see them, taking that into count if they pulled out an SAK it would likely get a reaction.

Appearances are everything, if they look like a drug dealer, gangster or bum in the 1st place......

People dress like crap around my area, look like complete bums, cargo shorts and flip flops just about every place I look, look like a bum and people will think you are a bum and then pull out a knife and they get what they get......

If they don't have enough respect for themselves to put some clothes on how can they expect anyone else to have respect for them?

I live in a small farming town so most people dont care, ill get a few people that comment on me having a knife when i go out of town.

As long as the yuppies don't start moving in it will be fine, once that happens it will be the same as living in a city.

At least you don't live where they try to dress like gang bangers but are really big posers with their hats on sideways and their pants pulled below their arse with their undies hanging out. Even an SAK would be a weapon in the hands of someone deranged enough to dress like that!! :barf:

Oh they dress like that too here.... :thumbdn:

Like I said they dress like crap... :barf:

I remember watching the AI auditions and the people from NC were the worst dressed of all the ones I saw, most of them looked like complete bums....

Really sad.....
