Have super locks - still carry liner locks + lockbacks?

Hi Tightwad,

I couldn't agree with you more! If a folder is being used properly, NO lock should be necessary. It is only there JUST IN CASE something goes very wrong.

No stabbing with an open folder!

No back-pressure on an open folder!

If someone is doing these tasks, get a fixed blade! Otherwise, you're just asking for problems.

Thanks for the perspective. :)

I agree, no folder is a substitute for a fixed blade. However some of us cannot socially or even legally carry a fixed blade. Yet, in such a situation one may be required to use a folder for stressful activities. It only seems rational to want the strongest lock availible. Its like a car that can go 160 mph. you can say that if you want to use a car to go that fast get a race car. we don't need a car that goes any faster than 70. However, there may be situations when going faster is necessary and a race car is neither practical or legal to drive on the streets. You may not need that extra bit all the time. You may not ever need it. But, it is nice to know it is there.

I really think most locks are reliable if the knife is from a reputable manufacturer with a proven track record.

However...
When using liner-locks, frame-locks, and the Spyderco compression-lock, I don't fear the lock failing to hold the blade open, I fear that the lock will not hold the blade closed.
I have never had a liner-lock close on my fingers but I have had one partially open in my pocket.
I don't like surprises like that.

I have always trusted a well made lock-back and I always will. I've used my Schrade LB7 for many years now and it still locks up as tight as any of my knives.

Good luck,
Allen.
