Have the urge for full serrations.

For some reason I have the urge to get a fully serrated knife. I currently own all plain edge blades. I am a spyderco fan and the fully serrated endura is at the top of my list. Are there any other knives that I should consider? Should I even bother spending money on a knife with full serrations? Im kinda up in the air right now on purchasing a fully serrated blade or spending the money on another plain edge.

It depends on what you're planning to use it for. I'm assuming, based on your BF username, you'll be using/carrying it in or around water (saltwater)? Full serrations are ideally suited for quick, ripping cuts through fibrous, stringy material like rope, vines, etc. If you will be using it in the water/ocean, the Spyderco Salt series is probably a no-brainer.

If, on the other hand, you're thinking about it just because it looks wicked (nothing wrong with that ;)), just consider that you might not find it as useful for other, more typical cutting tasks.

And, as a side-note, beware: If a fully serrated blade ever bites you, it HURTS A LOT MORE! They tend to hold on. Be careful...

Buy the serrated knife if you want it. It will have it's uses.

Lavan - is that an Endura 4? Tell us about the handel materials used plz?

. I second that...it also will bleed more and cut deeper.

I'm pretty sure I gave myself nerve damage with a fully serrated Pacific Salt. I'm pretty knife bite prone on my fingers and knuckles, but the Salt cut deeper than anything I've ever been cut by. :(

Sorry to hear that Turbo Tension :( sucks to get bit bad. Been lucky but have a few superficial scars myself.

I was going to ask about the Civilian, it looks wicked. I always buy plain edge. For a SHTF self defense folder then, a full Spyder-edge would be the ticket for inflicting max damage?

I had the "urge" to get an SE a few months ago. I used the Caly 3 SE a couple times, and then I went straight back to PEs.

I didn't appreciate the snagging, and I didn't like having to use something like the Sharpmaker to sharpen it. The cutting action was VERY aggressive, though; I could see where it would be beneficial for cutting something like rope or other fibrous material.

Yes, just get one and see for yourself. I made a video with SE vs PE for YouTube.... but I keep getting "unknown errors" when I try to upload them :(

I have found a "sharp" SE does NOT snag and also does "almost" everything a PE can do (besides shave and whittle)... and it does most things BETTER! (thick plastic, rubber, rope, tree limbs, cardboard, food, cutting cheese (the SEs allow air behind the cheese and blade and the cheese does not stick to the blade,) carpet, thick zipties, like I said most everything better ;) )

That's not to say I hate PE, PE just looks so much better. A full SE sebenza would look like crap IMHO... But I LOVE my full SE ZDP Endura, SE ZDP Delica, and SE Milie

Also, if you turn your ultra fine "benchstone" up on end and only use the corner you can sharpen on that. No need to by anything extra... If you don't already have a Spyderco extra fine stone... YOU NEED ONE! For the love of your PEs and SEs... anysize... Spyderco ultra fine benchstone!!! :D

Just do it

How is the Civilian on deployment? I think I read that the Spyder hole was too small for good purchase? I may be mistaken though. :)

One of the nicest fully serrated blades I own is on a Wenger SAK, an Alpine Backpacker. That blade is incredible. Very acute and thin, and it never left me wishing for a plain edge.

Another one I'm liking lately is the serrated blade on a Byrd Wings slipit.

I find that snagging serrations tend to be dull serrations. And by far, the easiest way to sharpen them is by cloth buffing wheel. The only kind that present a problem are Cold steel style tiny serrations. They are so tiny and tall that they present unique problems both cutting and sharpening. Though they are very well and easily sharpened by improvised cardboard wheel and Dremel.

I've EDC'ed a Spyderco Delica SE (OK, up to the last maybe 1/4") for about 12 years and it's OK. I bought it for when i'm climbing and need to clean up old, UV-eaten webbing and stuff. It glides through rope, cord, webbing with ease - and i don't mean just the tatty, old UV-eaten stuff either.

However, i'm not climbing everyday and there are soo many times when a PE would serve me better. In fact, most of the time a PE would serve me better. Though if you've an itch to get a SE, a Spydie is hard to beat. Their serrations are *wicked* sharp and not too bad to re-sharpen either.

Yep. It's the standard stainless Endura where I fileworked the blade back and sent to Bob Hawley at Windy Ridge Designs for the engraving.

:)

(also, now it has the holes plugged with ground down screws. It looks even BETTER)

I recently cured my urge by getting yet another Endura...this time fully serrated:cool:
