Have we reached the pinnacle of knife development technology?

There will always be further technological advances , but judging from historical patterns , the old ways often continue to coexist alongside the new .

We have modern firearms , but still have black powder and archery hunters , cowboy 3 gun shooting events etc .

My wife loves her advanced electric toothbrush . I much prefer a manual .

My father was an early adopter of the electric carving knife and proud of it . I've never owned one and don't plan to .

I don't think our familiar type knives will be entirely replaced anytime soon . Simple , useful and relatively inexpensive .:thumbsup:
True! I don’t think our “old” 1095 knives are going anywhere.

Depends on your priorities. Some guys like a workable knife that holds a fair edge and maintains toughness (rolls, not chips), is stainless, AND sharpens without diamonds. In my history, that's always been CPM154.

For me, the 20CV variants have been great for folders, I couldn't ask for more. Cruwear is amazing for a fixer, but it really isn't a one knife (no corrosion) situation. I'd have to say, Magnacut is billed to be that steel for me right now. A 5.5" fixer in that steel could be my one knife solution, at the moment. There's lots of theory being bandied about regarding it, so I can't wait to see how it fares. I use my stuff for what it's intended, no abuse. So, it will get a fair shake, barring some oddball poor heat treat.

the thing i really like about magnacut is the 'standard' hrc should be 62-64 with simple but controlled ht

all while giving you stainless with what seems to be the minimum chrome possible

Am I the only one here who would like the ability to pry open a paint can lid every now and then with a folder and not have much worry that the tip or portion of the blade will snap.

No, you’re not. Knives are tools, there are plenty of great knives out there that will take that abuse. But realize, for every super badass overbuilt knife there are people who will collect 10 of them and keep them in a drawer for some reason.

Knives are cutting tools though, not general purpose prying tools. Once you ask a knife to be that too, you have to diminish its primary purpose of being a cutting tool. So this is what we get, a slew of knives that are very durable and don't cut very well.

While knife and cutting tools in general have come a long way and have been refined in function, durability, sharpness and edge stability I think there’s still room for improvement. Technology seems to lag a bit and there’s plenty out now and some just around the corner. Processes improve, materials improve, along with new and better formulas and designs. So no I don’t think we’re at the pinnacle just yet or maybe I should say the possibilities are still there.

It's already here . Defeats paint can lids etc and makes cats submit to thy will !

I love my traditional knives, but would love a lightsaber too.

I told you, I'm workin' on it. Patience, young Jedi....patience. :)

I direct you back to post # 31, back on page 2 of this thread.........

Right now I'm really enjoying CPM3v and Magnacut!!

Not sure where super steels and beyond supersteels will end up.

I'm remembering a article I recently saw that said "man may fly some time in the next million years" it was printed a week or so before the Wright Brothers flew at Kittyhawk....

Sudden leaps in technology happen lightning fast.

Ok boys let’s pack it in. It took magnacut a year or so to become available to consumers so according to my calculations a miniaturized version of this lightsaber should be available at walmart by halloween

a drop point, or wharn blade will allow you to use the spine to pry open paint cans...
why do people insist on using the tip or edge?? seriously, I don't understand it

I don't understand why we're talking about using knives to open paint cans at all.

I cannot possibly think of a single SHTF/survival scenario where one might only have a knife and a can of paint and no other way to open it. And if it's not a SHTF scenario, surely there are a multitude of other more appropriate tools around to pry the lid off the can.

What if it's literally SHTF and you need to do an emergency repaint? Can't do that if the paint's trapped in the can.
