HAve you cut down on knife purchases since the economy tanked?

I have been collecting tobacco pipes for years, and have amassed a large collection, which I have decided to sell off in favor of just keeping the ones I enjoy smoking (which I only do a couple of times a week now). As I sell them off, I use the funds to buy new knives. I then whittle instead of smoking, which makes my wife happy.

I really only started collecting about a year ago, so, to answer you question, no.

i think that's a smart way to go which is to sell things you no longer use and put the money towards future knife purchases. :p

Actually just the opposite, all these this week... Time to slow down....

Sometimes you just have to skip meals for the important things..:D

I've been vacillating back and forth. Only been into knives since this spring. But I try to keep only what I use which makes it very tough when everything looks good and a new "genres" of knife open up in one's experiences.

I.E. I tried fix blades and didn't get enough use out of them for me to be interested. But slipjoints have me pretty excited I have gone through 3 in recent months. And have found solace in the secondary market, keeps it fun and the budget doesn't go out the door. I found one just recently for about $7 shipped. It needs some rehabbing so I'm going to work on it for fun.

Some of the custom slipjoint makers are indeed just out of this world though. I work in and around Wall St. and 2008 re-prioritized my life. I basically saw about 30% of that industry shrink and those people were never ever going to get their jobs back.

As much as I want to go nuts on knife buying I know that I'm not going to go and cutup XX.X percentage more things just because I bought a new knife. Lol. Although someone on this dang forum would have be trying to test the sharpness of their newly purchased and sharpened blade on a twinkie and a tic tac and somehow I would convince myself that I need to try THAT knife out because it cut up a tic-tac so good. I also don't feel good about spending a lot of money on something that I will probably trade out in 48 hours which has been historically what has happened this past summer. I don't know if buying a super high quality or expensive knife would change that either. = )

I got a job out of college right when the economy tanked so I went from a broke college kid to a broke guy with a career :D

Honestly though, I went from having enough spare cash to buy lunch here and there to having enough spare cash to buy a knife here and there. I prefer the latter. Eating is overrated.

My purchases of knives has gone down, but not because of the economy--I've just really filled out most of the holes in my arsenal a this point. I've always been drawn towards the budget-friendly stuff anyway. However, my purchases of vintage scythes has gone WAY up as of this year. I've got around 40 snaths right now and over 100 blades. :D
