Have you ever actually broken a knife in use?

I have broken the tip off of several Buck 110s and 112s over the years . . .my fault every time.

Has Buck ever made these models in a tougher alloy?

Does anyone make a third party replacement blade for these models?

Yes. BUT I was broke down and decided to take that risk to get through the situation. Having the right tool is all good and dandy but when there not available and it can’t wait you do what ya gotta.

I have broken the blade off a leather man wingman when cutting cardboard no abuse needed
The hole in the blade is a weak point.

Broke the tip off a buck fixed blade I was cutting some rubber and hit a staple in the wood behind it. Must have been the heat treat.

Also broke the first quarter inch off a SOG seal pup when I stabbed it into a log while camping. I left it over night and the tree sap froze to the blade. When I pulled the knife out the tip stayed in the tree.

I once was throwing purpose built throwing knives and… for reasons I don’t completely understand… I threw a leatherman. I should have known what was gonna happen.

Busted the locking feature off the back of the knife.

Other than that? Nope.

Been using knives for about 65 years. Never broke one, or chipped a blade. Just use them to cut with, though. I don't throw them, baton them, or abuse them. Never had a locking folder fail, because I use them like they were a slipjoint..

the only knife I broke was one of the old school Western Bowie knives (purchased in the early ‘80’s), took it camping and was chopping some wood near a rock, cut through the wood and hit a rock, took some serious chips out of the blade, had the knife reground but was warned the temper might be messed up. Still have the knife and sheath and it was absolutely an operator error, no disrespect towards the knife. (I might have had a couple of camping beverages as well…). Live and learn.

Just curious, was the seal pup an older model (made in Seki Japan), or a newer model (made in Taiwan or China)?

SEAL Pup was made in both Seki, Japan and Taiwan, now also in China. The Taiwanese and Chinese versions differ from the original Seki version in terms of blade shape, less choil and also handle shape/ergonomics.

I know, have 6 seki models and 4 Taiwan models myself. Was wondering which one he had that snapped at the tip.

Me neither, but I’m younger. Only rusted my first ever pocket knife, a carbon Opinel, when I was 10 or so. Cut some ham with it, left it in a drawer for some weeks, when I took it again it was a solid piece of red rusted metal which wouldn’t even come out of the handle.

Never broke one but did ruin one

I was stupid and tried to cut a power cable to fix without checking the power was disconnected

The power sparked and welded/blew a chunk out my edge

Snapped just the tips off a Puma 470 and Buck 110 trying to use them as small screwdrivers when I was 25 or so, learned my lesson and haven't had a problem since (almost 65 now) Fortunately I was able to get both of them reground so you can't notice the damage.

Not ruined, just do it yourself serration.

Yes, and I still remember that day of shame:

It was in 1987 (as a 7 year old ) on one of my first scout camps:
I had this:

And I actually thought this was the bees knees... I hacked away on some hardwood and threw the knife ninja style around...
Well, after the first day, it already showed signs of weakness, and as it broke the next morning while cutting fresh fruit for the breakfast, I was devastated.

My "stupid" red SAK* was the only knife that I had for the three remaining days, while the others where all high on their fixed knives and I really took some flak for it...

*I still have that SAK and it's still going strong:)

Every knife that I have ever had a major break with, was through abuse.

Now if we are talking tip damage, that's another story.
