Have you ever been looked down upon regarding knives by those who have no clue?

Okay guys, marking this as Off Topic since I'm not sure where it belongs. Anyway, today I went to a local gun show. Nothing going on, so I figured why not. Anyways, one of the last booths had an interesting looking balisong. Patina'd blade, brass handles with some sort of acrylic-based inlay.

Seeing as it looked different than the standard "goods" you see blade-wise in most gun shows, I figured I'd ask the price. The guy then went off with a story about the blade being forged in the Philippines during the Vietnam (I believe) War, and proceeded to ask for $300 for it. He had no papers with it or any backing for this claim, given it doesn't mean much anyways. I then let out a muffled "mhm" and proceeded to look at what (may) have been Microtechs. The guy pats me on the shoulder and says to me, "Sorry kid, I don't have any cheap Chinese ones for you". I then smiled politely and walked away.

I will admit, I am on the younger side of things and look even younger, and I can understand what he had assumed through my appearance. Most people know very little about cutlery (I assume he knew very little as well), and being a young man it was probably a safe assumption. However, I feel that the comment was completely unnecessary and had I been of lesser mind, I probably would've had a less than polite remark.

Anyways, my question to you guys is: has anyone ever judged, ridiculed, or talked down on you, mainly regarding knives and other cutlery, when they did not know you or know of our interest in the hobby? Have you ever had someone comment poorly on one of your knives, proceeding they show off their "top quality" blades? Just curious how often this happens to everyone.

Thanks guys!

Coworker: My knife cuts circles around yours!. Pulls out crappy Smith and Wesson with serration and tries to cut cardboard.
Me: Pull out ZT 550 and cut up an entire box in front of his eyes
Coworker: Well, I need to sharpen mine...

the people that know me wouldnt dare look down at me i mean come on i carry knives!! lol never had a problem but then i live in rual virginia where everyone has knives and guns`!

All the time, especially other knife nuts.

im a sushi chef, trust me my knives are well kept and sharpened.

I had to have a meeting with a member of HR at a facility I was doing some work at due to the last inch and a half of my sheath sticking out of my shirt. They requested to measure it to see if it violated their weapon policy. 3 1/2" long Rodent Solution and the policy is 3"; so, I can't carry that one with me. They have no qualms about me carrying a Satu or openly playing with locks at my desk. Strange.

I wish someone would just call me young man:) or even ask for I.D.
I find that forgiving ignorance is much more fulfilling than arguing .

I've had far more people look down on upon me regarding knives on this very forum, than by those who "have no clue".

Among that latter group, the number of times is exactly zero. At least to my face. If they looked down on me for my knives, they never let it show.

I had a similar experience at a show...the guy was "educating" me on how great his tac-force knives where, after he saw I wasn't biting he asked me what I Carried? I pull out my ZT 0200 and after that I wasn't bothered. ;)

My girlfriend tells me she does not like that I always have a knife, but she says she doesn't like me beard either, so what does she know? Cant wait to show her my Praetorian Ti and TiTAN 2 down the line

Funny when knifenuts never heard of ZT or sebenza.

'Brah, its all about crkt'. No offense to crkt owners just a lot of kids think crkt is cream of the crop.

I have gotten a few of my coworkers asking 'whats better' and how much they should spend

Never a problem.

But, of course, I was born, raised, and worked most of my life in S. La. - just outside of New Orleans. And then moved to the mountains of New Mexico. Two places that have few qualms about carrying a knife. During my work life, everyone - literally - carried a knife so no judgements. In my home life people were good ole fashioned country folk. Fishermen. Hunters. Farmers. People who use knives regularly. Here in New Mexico (at least in my part of the state) ranching is the big deal. Knives are common.

I suspect that an urban environment would create a larger potential for prejudice against people who carry knives...

I have people around me everyday who don't understand why I carry a knife or knives. A lot of sheeple here in CA. I just ignore them.

Born and raised in New York City, but in the 50's we all had knives. They were all traditional slipjoints, -- but it was a start. :) My father and grandfather made sure we always had pocket knives.

Now? New York is so anti-knife that the 2 New York knife shows moved to New Jersey. Of course the man in the street has no decent knife and no respect for those of us who do. Pitiful change of affairs. Not that it's a problem for us living in New Jersey now!

"Is yours assisted?" "Hmph... Mine is" *pulls out tac-force*
He than babbles on how its "designed in america"

Hey u shouldnt be whining, crkt is up there, at least the people around u are interested in a quality brand, i have to deal with a bunch of gerber and tac force fanboys

I have most of my co workers converted to zt. Its kind of funny to see 5 guys all carrying 0550's, and racing each other to the scene of whatever needs to be cut that second. They almost stroked out when i told them they could get custom scales to make theres "cooler than everyone elses."

All the time. I'm a blonde haired blue eyed woman in my 20's. I was at a gun show and had a man proceed to tell me what the legal carry length was....wrong. What the laws on auto's were, wrong again....and then try to sell me some cheap, un HT knife. Usually I take these comments with grace and shrug it off....but this man was extra prickish. So I quoted some penal code, showed him my ZT, and was on my way.
