Have you ever been surprised to see somebody else carrying a knife?

Perhaps it is a function of where I live and the responses that I have received when I use a knife, but I am often surprised when I see somebody else using one. Yesterday I was at Toys 'r Us with my son for a Beyblade tournament and his friend's father pulled a Victorinox Spartan out of his pocket to cut open a package. Sad reflection on the time and place that I live that I was surprised.

A guy in my engineering class had a kershaw of some kind in his pocket with the silver clip showing. I almost never see knives on campus so it was surprising. I wish I knew the model he has. I didn't feel like asking at the time.

Where I live, it's fairly common to have a knife. Almost everyone has one and their all mostly crappy Gerber's, every once in a while a kershaw. I did see a guy carrying a Benchmade 960 and I made a comment to him, we had a little discussion about it.

I was dining in an Italian restaurant last night and noticed an older gentleman ( mid 70's ? ) with a rather large and obvious knife clip showing outside his front pocket. When he got up to leave they brought him a walker and he shuffled out the door. Not sure why but I thought that was cool.

It's not uncommon to see people carry folders in sheaths on their belt the same way as cell phones around here.

My 25 year old niece surprised me the other day. She showed me her knife collection, and her brand new Pink .22 rifle. It was a pleasent suprise. Her knife collection was a bunch of cheap china made knives. After seeing her collection I gave her a pink Mini Griptilain to match her pink .22 rifle. I also gave her a Izu tatical pen. She also now has a youth model 870 that I suggested she get. My niece is very petite 4'9". What I should say really suprised me was that she went and got her Fire Arm Permit on her own....That really surprised me.

I saw a guy on a college campus carrying a Socom Elite in his pocket. I wanted to say "Hey, I've got one too!" but I missed my chance.

The way I was raised if I got my pants on I've got a knife somewhere in or on them. I'm not quite as old as the gentleman in the restuarant. I've carried a knife in some shape or form for over 50 years here and abroad.

It's not uncommon or surprising to see anyone carrying a knife here. Lots of fishing, hunting, outdoor, construction, farmers, military people here. What is surprising is seeing someone carrying anything other than a Gerber or Kershaw from Academy or the PX.

I see lots of people carry and use a knife. It would be unusual to see someone use a GOOD knife however.

I live in NC and that's how I carry my Benchmade Mini Grip 556 or Kershaw Leek, in a knife sheath on my belt and I work in a corporate office environment. Others carry their knives clipped in the pockets. Hunting and fishing are big time hobbies here.

Not so much. Sadly most of the pocket clips I see are on guys that resemble mall ninjas at best. Once in a while I see them on a regular looking fella. No women yet.

No surprises here. Knives are a daily part of my life so it's no big deal when I see someone else carrying.

I don't even bother to look for or notice pocket clips. I do give a moments interest when I see someone carrying a fixed-blade, because I carry a fixed-blade. I've seen several guys carrying them in urban enviornments. Perhaps the most memorable was a male customer in Walmart. He was carrying what might have been a buck General (I think that's what they're called). A female employee said something to him that I couldn't hear and then in a joking voice said "Just don't kill me with it". He laughed, said he wouldn't, and continued his shopping. I don't see any reason why Walmart employees would have a problem with customers carrying fixed-blades, after all, Walmart SELLS fixed-blades.

I was in photography class and the professor was doing a demonstration on printmaking and she was having trouble opening the box of paper. I was about to offer my knife when the dude with the purple and green dyed hair took out some kind of small knife and handed it to her. I've got to admit, I was taken off guard by it.

Actually today.....lady at work. Saw a clip in her pocket and said 'Do you have a knife?" She grinned at me and pulled out a full serrated Spyderco Civilian. She said 'I also have a Delica, Endura, and Tenacious'. Too bad I'm already married...

Everytime I see someone with a knife in their pocket I try to figure out what kind of knife it is by the look of the clip. For the most part I spot Kershaws and those folding razor knives. I've spotted a couple Spydercos. It doesn't really surprise me, but if I ever ran into someone else with a real high end blade I probably would be.

Once, at a grocery store, I saw a very attractive girl produce a small purple Spyderco from
her pant's pockets and cut some loose threads in her shirt. That was extremely sexy, for some
reason. Too bad I didn't have time to stick around and chat with her.

In my area, no kids (under 25) ever usually have a knife on them, and when they do it is usually a Maxam, a Smith and Wesson, or some other chinese knife. Almost every guy over 25 has a knife on them usually. I live in a city of over 100,000 and I find that pretty amazing; how a the majority of men have knives on them, and usually they are Kershaws or Cold Steels. I have never seen someone with a Spyderco, twice I've seen Benchmades, and never a CRK or a Strider on someone.

I see knives all the time since I work mostly on construction sites, but they're usually junkers. Weirdly enough, they're usually Kershaw Leek knock-offs. Of the very few people I've spoken to about it, one guy actually knew what the original Kershaw model was; when I asked him if it was a Leek, he showed it to me and explained in a semi-embarrassed tone that it was indeed a fake. He also pointed out how poorly it opened. I don't remember if it was spring assisted (like the original) or not, but I remember it opening slow and ugly.

At my other job, which is retail, I was very surprised to find there are at least two self-professed knife collectors. Their top-shelf knives are current CRKTs and Gerbers. I showed a couple Spydercos and Benchmades to them both and while they were pleased, a bit of chatting revealed that they don't really know much about knives beyond what they can glean from shopping at Walmart and sporting goods stores. I tried to engage them both in some fairly nerdy knife talk and it was like I was speaking moon language. But hey, a knife enthusiast is a knife enthusiast -- I don't care what you know own, as long as you support the industry and you're into blades!
