so i was down at this gun show down in coconut grove and i was talking to one of the only exhibitors that had quality knives. it started with his typhoon which his friend made that was up for sale and it moved onto the folders. i got to handle alot of knives i had never seen in person before: the 806D2 (which really was bigger than what i thought it would be) among other BM's.

so he was showing me the assisted opening kershaws and he pulls out a larger one i'm not sure which it is but i know NGK doesn't stock it. and he tells me to try it out, that its real cool. just as i'm opening it he tells me "but dont follow the thumb stu...." boom. i was opening it with the thumbstud which started the spring assist and thwak, it leaps ahead of my thumb and i end up slicing my thumb as it follows the blade. uh oh... despite it being a pretty nasty cut i'm used to it from balisongs so i just asked him for a napkin or something feeling more embarassment than pain. he ended up saying just earlier a police officer had done the exact same thing except his cut was much worse....

so  has this ever happenned to you guys before?? :p

Once when setting up taking a bunch if junk knives out of a cigar box.
Nobody saw it though. I've seen it happen a lot to customers.

Moving to Blade Discussion Forum. :)

Oh god, I was debating on making a thread here earlier about what happened to me today but here's a good place to put it. So I'm in wal-mart looking at Kershaw Leeks. I have a Chive and I'm quite used to it so the guy gets me a Leek to play with before I buy it and slice right into my thumb the same exact way you did. I was so friggin' embarrassed and I'm supprised they actually sold me the knife after that. Luckily it was only like a paper cut and didn't bleed but it still sucked, I felt like such a noob.

Not until last weekend. Was taking my Assault Shaker out of the neck sheath, and SLICE, there goes INFI into the side of my thumb.

What a dumba$$....

I have had 4 people now cut themselves despite warning with blades off my table at shows. One guys response to my "they are sharp, please be careful" was "Sir, I am ex-Special Forces, I know hot to handle a weapon". The air wasn't over his vocal cords and JERK. He'd laid 2 fingers down into the pads.

He bought the knife though......LOL

Jeez, I can't believe myself. About three years ago I went to the NYC Empire Knife Club monthly meeting. I'm feeling pretty intimidated by the lack of familiar faces and that I am a new guy poking around. Within the first three minutes of my entry I ask about a fixed blade in a sheath on some fellow's display table.

"Can I look at it?"

"Sure, but watch it--that thing is sharp....!"

"No problem.... " I pull on the handle while holding the sheath and it doesn't budge, so I grip a little harder with both hands, pull again, and 'RRRRrrrrriiippp'. Out it comes.

Blood is now dripping all over from my sliced palm. Scary sharp thin hollow ground blade. Reflexively I reach for a yellow napkin to stop the bleeding and capture the drips.

Smooth move, Coop. I just grabbed the guys chamois to use as a band aid!  :D He gave me the biggest rolleyes one would deserve in such a scenario.

Somehow we straightened it out and I recovered a *little* bit of dignity by the end of the night. Not 100%, though.... ;)

We stll laugh about it when I see him. His name is John.

Nope, knock on wood. I've seen lots of people though. Usually with balisongs or sheathing/re-sheathing. When kydex was pretty new, I saw plenty of people slice themselves trying to figure them out.

I saw AG Russell cut himself at ECCKS back in the 80's, he had to go to the hospital and get stitches.

Doesn't matter who you are eventually you get cut.

I've seen dozens of folks cut themselves at shows. It's often frustrating for the knifemaker, because they're more than willing to help someone in distress, but the people normally don't tell you they've cut themselves. They close their hand, and walk quietly away (presumeably to bleed in private). Blood is extremely corrosive, so a knifemaker would want to clean his/her knife a.s.a.p.

The funniest such thing I've witnessed was a woman wearing a cotton summer dress admiring one makers knives. She was handling some of the knives, and tried to do the "good thing" of wiping the blade clean before handing it back. Unfortunately she chose to wipe it across the front of her dress, and promptly sliced it open. Fortunately no blood, but she had to leave the hall holding her clothes together!

I have heard about being cut used as a distraction technique for people who want a free blade.
I have seen 2 mall ninjas get sliced by crappy swords at a San Antonio show. One of them by thumb (dumb) testing and the other tip-sliced his buddy's elbow trying a 'move'. I wasn't even there very long and the hall was full of potentials.

I've cut myself many times, from Chinese made junk, on down to my good high end knives, playing with them, or out of juvenile carelessness. Also, the Chinese made junk fell apart or broke, that made me swear off anything made in China, I may be screwed over now from what I am reading on the boards, everyone subcontracting to China. As for people getting hurt at shows, I am very careful, and every assisted opening or automatic knife I pick up, I get the "safety spiel" from the guy behind the counter. At first, my Kershaw Blackout took about a half an hour to get used to, after that, it's a lot of fun. At the farmers market I go to, the guy who sells there has a few assisted Kershaws and SOG knives, and tells me that people, after hearing him describe and show them how to open the knife, still cut themselves, sometimes he sticks his finger in the knife so it will open on him, rather than them. He has a huge box of bandaids with him at all times. Sometimes I just go up there and BS with him, and I've seen people, who say they understand how to work the knife, almost take off their own fingers. The first time I picked up a linerlock, I paid attention to the guy when he showed me how to work it. Same for the assisted opener. I've watched people at shows swing the knives over their head as if they were performing martial arts, and I am still surprised that they still have their ears and hair. I'll keep an eye out at the Timonium Gun and knife show for mishaps.

Also, what I love to see, it really cracks me up, are people testing the sharpness of the blade  , and get a huge cut. Well, duh! Don't press down hard on the edge, it's a knife, it's supposed to be sharp! That always get a chuckle out of me.

I got cut once at a show and it was really embarrasing to me. It was at a dealer whose table my brother and I usually stop at, peruse their new stuff, and chat a bit. The dealer handed me a MOD knife, and when I went to open it it was a bit stiffer than I expected, somehow it got away from me, my thumb slipped off, and I got cut. It was just a nick but I was pretty embarrased. I just made sure there was no blood on the knife, gave it back, stuck my hand in my pocket, and walked away. I doubt anyone even noticed, but I couldn't believe I'd cut myself just opening a simple folder.

Haven't cut myself at a gun show YET....

But... I did get plenty humiliated once when I was carrying my wifes Mini-14 and the cheesy sling I was using came undone unexpectedly. That rifle hit the floor and it was louder 'n a gunshot "KATHWOK!!" I swear you coulda heard a pin drop in there and all eyes in the show were on yours truly. :o :o Then the guy who had just made a pretty low ball offer shouts over "Well, ya' might consider dropping that price another hundred dollars!!"

I've cut myself a time or two in the local knife store, As I recall it was with a Balisong of some sort...I just quietly asked for a papertowel, concealed the wound in my closed fist and tried to play it cool. To the gents credit, he didn't even raise an eyebrow, said it happens all the time and not to sweat it.

This is admittedly a repeat of my post from the "40 days and nights of cutlery disasters" thread...

I was at a knife and gun show with a gun collector friend and my wife... we were looking at a display of Cold Steel knives and as I was holding one I noticed that the serrations were different looking than what I was used to on most of my other folders. So I'm like lightly touching the serrations with my thumb and remarking sagely "this appears to be a different serration pattern than usual" when I quickly close the folder, replace it on the table, and walk away from the booth.

My wife thought I had been insulted or something it was so quick. Nope, I was just embarassed as hell.

You could follow me by the blood trail my thumb left on the ground all the way to the bathroom at the expo center where I eventually got the bleeding to stop. I think my gun collector friend would have paid to get that kind of laugh. He liked it better than the show.

Hmm, different serrations... sharp, though.

never cut myself at a gunshow but saw a lady fire a can of OC one time, was funny watching the dealers choking they couldnt leave the hall and there stuff on the table (theft) and couldnt hardly stay either lol, they banned OC at the austin show for several yrs afterwards, ya still have to have it in a package of some sort where it wont fire.

I've only done it once (so far). It was two or three years ago at a C&E gun/knife show in Hickory, NC. I was looking at a Kershaw Leek when I felt a nice little bite, looked down and the tip of my right index finger was oozing blood. I felt so stupid, tried to play it off, handed the knife back to the guy and headed for the restroom to wash the blood off and get a piece of paper towel. I now carry two or three band-aids every time I go to a show. To date I haven't needed them. ;)
